Two Updates For IE8

So Im reinstalling and the first time the update process downloaded but would not install…gave me ‘try again’ option.

Instead I shut down, then restarted, once that was done, there were two IE 8 for Vista 64 available for download. I tried to get more info on the first(dated 12/14/2010) but only came up with it trying to load something from IP: 64.4.11.160.

Did a trace route and it registers to a hotmail ISP in Maryland.

Below is a pic…could use some help as Im just trying to get an old lady(my mom) safe on the internet again.

Anybody got a guess

Based on your snapshot, not all your updates were checked off and should have been. Also, the date you mentioned was the date MS did their big update for all OS’s. I’m not sure what servers they use. Did you go through the Windows Update to get your MS Updates? I would trust that site. After downloading, then installing the updates, it forces you to reboot your machine. Did you reboot after this?

Since not everything was checked off on the updates, I would go back into Windows Updates to check for updates and install them…then reboot. See if this fixes your problem.

Perhaps you can check your firewall when you get the updates to see what the IP address is, or someone else cares to comment about the IP address.

You are correct. I have not even ran that set of updates. Why do I need two IE 8 updates…in the past any updates to IE were labeled as such, not the labeled IE 8 like its a whole new IE 8.

Also, I cannot find any MS pages showing an update released on that date.

Actually I just found it. I think I will just get it from the downbload center after fiunishing my updates. I am alos missing interent speed(like over half) so thats why this was a concern.

Have a look at the file sizes and the two IE8 updates are different.

That doesnt mean much other than they are two different packages. Im thinking the reason it gave me both of them as FULL IE8 installs is that they are. I had not installed IE8 yet, so it was giving me the opportunity to choose the newest release, as they had to fix the old one over the conime virus attacks(although they simply account it to japenese characters). BTW, this is why Im reinstalling(conime in start up menu).

Anyhow, problem solved.

I think it means they aren’t identical, which is the point I was making, as you should only be offered packages, etc. that you need. It is a shame that they couldn’t differentiate that you effectively would only want one, IE8 with latest update, weird. Perhaps they are concerned that some might not want the latest update (just IE8) for a little while to see if there were any stability issues with the latest IE8 security update.

That was my thoughts exactly. Thanks again for understanding my ‘der-der-duer!’ moment.
