Unable to click anything in Avast UI and on Windows after opening Avast

Hello there,

I have been having an issue where I can’t click on anything within the UI and on Windows. So I open AVAST and then I try to launch or click on anything and nothing happens, I can’t even close the UI or click on other Windows icons or programs. The same thing happens when an AVAST pop-up window appears and then I try to click on it. The only thing that lets me take back control of Windows is by prompting the Windows task manager and then by ending the UI. However I am unable to do this for the pop-up window, I regain control of windows but the pop-up doesn’t go away. I have to log out of the session for it do go away. I had this exact problem with AVG, I though it was a bug and so I uninstalled it and installed AVAST, which worked fine for a day. I am running on Windows 7. I noticed some people had the same problem but I couldn’t find if they had resolved the issue. Does anyone have any clue what is causing this issue? Thank you for your help n____n

Thank you for your quick reply! I actually just installed Malwarebytes and it found PUP.Optional.InstallCore and I guess after it put it quarantine, the problem stopped. I don’t know if it was related as I couldn’t find any problems that were similar related to this PUP.Optional.InstallCore.

Any thoughts on this?

Omg I restarted the PC after I had quarantined the file with Malwarebytes and after being able to re-access AVAST, however the same issue is back.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of any prior installed AV(s)…!!

Then:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.
