I’m running Windows 7 64 bit, for reference.
So, I started up my computer today, ready to get to work (and hopefully help my Dota team later), but I noticed avast didn’t start up. it claimed I was not registered, and had 0 days left on the plan. I knew this was wrong, because I have the free version. I tried to restart it, but nothing happened, so I at least tried to turn the services on. they wouldn’t start, and it would give me an error having to do with endpoints or something. I don’t know exactly what it said, and can’t reproduce it, because I restarted, then when that didn’t work, tried to reinstall avast. I now get this error: http://puu.sh/7n6F2.jpg , and avast will not install. I tried the third party uninstaller and that simply cleaned it up, without installing on boot, and giving the message in safe mode
I panicked a bit, and got Malwarebytes, and it wouldn’t install either. I had the bright idea of changing the program’s name from mbam.exe to something else, and somehow, it worked. Tried it with avast’s installer. no dice. Malwarebytes, during a quick scan, found a set of about sixteen files it labeled as security.hijack files designated for windows defender, avast, mbam, etc, and it appeared they killed any process that used files with those tags, like avast scans. I had them removed, then restarted. this is where I am at now.
windows defender works again
Malwarebytes works again
I learned I have McAfee instally. that’s gonna be a pain.
Avast still gives me http://puu.sh/7n6F2.jpg if I try to install it.
I’ve been using Avast for about a year now, and honestly feel a little naked with just windows defender.
does anyone have a suggestion that does not include backing up, and reinstalling windows? I don’t have access to anything I need to do that.
