Unable to make changes after boot scan

I get through a boot scan and it shows various things wrong, but my screen is frozen and I’m unable to make any changes.

I’m using Windows XP and the new Avast 5, which I just installed yesterday after using Avast 4.

What exactly does it show wrong (a few examples)?

It showed a spyware and some corrupted files. Is there a place that I can look to see what the log was, or would it have only posted a log if I had been able to complete the process?

I ran the boot-time scan again and again it froze when it was done and there were six items…

  4. System volume information_restore {B3768 0B2- BA0A -4E5D- BF30- 83E 44C58 8624}\RP331\A0065408.msi|>css can.exe is infected win32:spyware - gen [SPY]

On problem involved a Maxtor backup (which is my external hard drive) and I deleted that backup.
Another involved a small program that I had moved to my external hard drive “Bad Copy” that was corrupt, and I just deleted the program.
I assume I can also delete the Maxtor (my external hard drive) backup for Musicmatch also, but I haven’t.
