ok… here is the jist of it… I had soem issues getting Avast to start at all… so I figured with the issue I was having with it soaking up all my processor speed and not starting up at all was due to my registry. So I uninstalled Avast, did a compleat window re-install, and compleatly re-installed Avast. No I get avast to start up, but I’m getting a weird error message when id does the memory scan, and the actual scan and to add insult to injury, it don’t even scan… it starts, stops, and pops up the error message in about 5 secs.
The error message is as follows:
Unknown Error
Scan completed with errors:
42000 = Unknown error
Thats what I get every time I start Avast and try to scan with it. I have tryed to repair it as well… and have had no luck.
I’m on Windows XP pro SP2, Have Zone Alarm firewall and have had for some time with no probs with Avast before, Xoftspy and Ad-Aware, and WINMX P2P. but none have given any issues with Avast before… Never had any issues till I was on a web site that I guess was infected and got a virus that if I remember correctly was a WIN32. Avast detected it, but didn’t give me an option to delete it. So I tryed to do a manual scan of my hard drive, but Avast wouldne’t start at all and it was sucking all my memory up… And that sould about catch you up to my problems.
Unfortunately the 42000 unknown error isn’t easy to say for sure what it happened, you could do a forums search for 42000 and see if it brings any information, but I fear it won’t help that much.
If something was detected on a web site by avast, it was most likely to have been detected by the Web Shield provider and the only option given was Abort Connection. This stops the file being downloaded and saved on your HDD so it shouldn’t be present. Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.
Xoftspy has some previous form and been previously listed as a rogue anti-spyware program, personally there are many other good anti-spyware programs out there with no such rep.
Which is your avast version and build?
Last 4.7.892 is mandatory right now…
Is there any other antivirus installed in this computer? Did it have in the past?
Any other security program that could interfere with avast installation?
There was the AOL anti virus that tryed to install on my harddrive with AOL security program but I denied it to install, other that that, none other than avast and the avast proggy is the newest build… I downloaded it and installed it after I uninstalled my old avast proggy when the first problem arose and reinstalled windows and then installed the new verson.
The same thing was happening to me. Avast would not scan. (It would check mail, but no scanning of memory or files or anything like that. ) I posted the problem a few days ago and nobody was able to figure it out.
So basically, I gave up and put the OEM antivirus back. I would like to use avast but if it won’t scan that 's a real problem.
This generally occur when a second, bad-uninstalled antivirus left trash (files, registry keys, system files, etc.) behind… :
Other possibility is other security program avoiding the correct installation and running of avast.
So what exactly do I need to do to get rid of these bad files to see if this is the issue… I’m not the most computer literate person when it comes to programming so if any info, try to keep it in simple terms and instructions if possible please ;D how do I get rid of these extra nasty files and regestry keys?
Basicaly start with the old av program. Use the uninstaller that came with it or use add/remove. Check that av’s website for additional removal instructions. If there are any, follow them completely. Then install avast.
Ardin, Xoftspy is a very bad program. Almost rogue one. I suggest you uninstall it completely through Control Panel.
Other antivirus would be, reading the previous posts of you, AOL. Use Control Panel too.
But, did you install PC-Cillin? If so, use the Control Panel to remove it too.
You must check if into AOL and PC-Cillin homepages are there any specialized tool to remove that old files and registry keys I was talking about.
