Unable to send e-mail with Thunderbird

Hi, I have a problem using the Avast mail scanner. I receive incoming mail fine, but can’t send mail. I have checked the Avast help file and my mail settings are exactly as suggested there. In each case the server has been changed to 127.0.0.1 and the username to username#popserver and #smtpserver (my ISP does not require user authentication with their SMTP server) respectively. But I am prompted for a password for the SMTP server and nothing I type there is accepted. What’s going on, please?

Avast 4.6.691, Thunderbird 1.0.6, Windows Me

Even your ISP does not require user authentication with its SMTP server, try to use them.
Try either username@server#popserver
Or, if you can set everything to work without avast!, close your email program, and run Mail Protection Wizard.
Welcome to avast! forums.

Many thanks for the help. I don’t quite know what I did, but when asked for a password for server 127.0.0.1 I entered an arbitrary sequence of letters which had nothing whatsoever to do with my ISP and asked the password manager to remember it. The message then went perfectly! And had the “mail clean” banner at the foot of the message. Ah, computers move in mysterious ways.

It’s very strange… Do you have only one email account configurated in your email program?
The ‘stupid’ password was not checked? :o
