Unable to set proxy settings...

Greetings,
recently I noticed that my automatic db updates ceased to work. I tried to check my proxy settings (connected through the one) and strangely, whenever I click PROXY button in Program Setings-Update (Connections), nothing happens, no other window is open, nothing.
Disabling Avast self-defence module did not help.
Any advice? I tried to search through forum but did not find anything relevant so far.
Thanks in advance.

Avast 4.8.1229
OA 2.1.0.131 (working seamelessly so far)
Windows XP SP3.

Are you saying you ‘are’ connected to the internet by a proxy assigned by your ISP, etc. (the web shield one doesn’t count) ?

If so have you selected the Specify proxy server option ?
Have you entered the proxy details and any authentication details if required ?

If your OA refers to Online Armor, then working seamlessly may be more luck as there a number of issues with OA reported in the forums, so I would suggest you get the latest update as one has recently been released.

I am connected through company’s proxy, which I have correctly set into Avast in the past and until recently everything worked OK, inclusive OA (yes, Online Armor) protection. The only difference now was change in my login profile, since now I am connected to the new domain (company proxy remains unchanged). In both login profiles, however I have added my account into admin group, so no problem with acccess rights. OA remains unchanged with me, using the old version which never had any problems with Avast.

Perhaps I should mention that I am a freelancer working now for the foreign company in a foreign country for now and connecting my private notebook used for private purposes (internet and post) so I hope I do not breach any rules for using home edition…

If connecting your private notebook for private purposes, surely that wouldn’t be connecting through the company proxy (which would technically be in debatable ground on Home and non-commercial use, both apply, but there wouldn’t be any difference if you were using Pro).

Unfortunately I have zero experience with networks, but I would have though that there would something like a VPN to get on to a company domain/proxy, I don’t know for certain. But I would have thought if thee was a VPN then somehow that would have to be configured.

Does the manual update work ?

Thanks for trying to help me, David.

Strange as it may sound, I still have the only possibility to get on the net through a company proxy, believe or not.
No, neither manual update did work.
So I meanwhile uninstalled the soft and made a new clean installation and hopla, it works no.
Still, my thanks again.
Jan

You’re welcome.

Looks like it could possibly have been firewall blocking without a notification, thought I would have expected some error messages from avast. There are a number of firewalls that do this, personally it is a pain in the rear as the user hasn’t a clue why something no longer works when it had no problems.
