Everything running fine in the update area until yesterday. Continue to get error message “Access is Denied”. during “saving packages” mode the saving stops short of the full kb’s downloaded, then comes the error message.
tried uninstalling and reinstalling, however I got an error unable to install.
I reimaged back to an earlier time, avast back, ran virus,malware,spyware scans, Nothing found.
disabled firewall upon a restart still no updates.
I have 2 other computers and they update fine.

no, the previous one was CA from verizon, uninstalled it in DEC and installed Avast
Do you use a proxy for internet access?
proxy server setting are “use Explorer settings”
tested proxy server got an OK
tried updateing again still same error message
would log help?

If you don’t use a proxy, try setting it to No proxy.
What is your OS ?
Are you running this from a limited user account ?

able to send log if needed
Have you now tried a manual update (right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select Updating, iAVS Update), did it work ?
If you still get the permissions issue, access denied, is avast installed in the default location (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4) ?
After trying the manual update, if that failed post the last 200-300 lines of the setup.log file, though I suspect it would just confirm the access denied problem.

I tried to update by downloading from Avast.com
downloaded file fine, Hit Run then got:
An error 5 (00000005)

Are you logged as an administrator?
Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Avast is installed in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4
it is Build Feb 2009 4.8.1335
the previous noted error occured when I tried to reinstall Avast
I am administrator
up until yesterday AM the auto update worked fine

Maybe there is a problem with your access rights and registry.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
- Boot.
- Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
- Boot.
- Install again the latest avast! version.
- Boot.
- Check and post the results.

ran scan
windows started
avast started
updated OK
really do not know why update stopped working, however w/ everybodies help
