unable to update virus database

Hi all. I’m new to the forum and I wish to great all you from Italy. My name is Danilo, from Rome.

I have a already reported error trying to update the virus database.
I have the 4.8.1229 version installed, I dowloaded the latest vspupd.exe and I was not able to update becouse I encountered the following error.:

SI=0x00000002
ST=0xffffffff
LE=0x00000000

I also tryed to reinstall the 4.8 home edition and I got a message like this (i don’t remember the exact sentence):

“Installation error.
Error 3 - last operation spawning”

I read about the suggestion:

“1)Download fixed files here:
http://public.avast.com/~forejt/test/setup.zip
2)Open avast settings, select Troubleshooting section, and set the checkbox to disable avast self-defense
3)Extract both files from downloaded setup.zip to avast4\setup folder
4)Run vpsupd.exe again
5)Enable avast self-defense again by unchecking the box in Troubleshooting settings again”

but I wasn’t able to download the setup.zip (error 404: page not found). Were I can get this setup.zip?

Can be a virus creating all this problem?

I hope someone can help me.

Many thank in advance (sorry for my poor english)

Danilo

ciao!
I think it can be useful for you if you do scan using a bootable AV disc to make sure if you are infected or not,
download it from http://dl1.pro.antivir.de/package/rescue_system/common/en/rescue_system-common-en.exe
run it and burn it to blank CD
boot your computer using this disc and do a scan and let it remove if anything wrong found

use avast! remover to uninstall avast! and reinstall again
get avast! remover from here: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

after install update avast! using VPS update: http://www.avast.com/eng/updates.html

buona fortuna!

Many tanks for your kind reply and your suggestions!
I see you know some italian, good! … you are right, I need very much luck becouse I read of so many problems like mine and I really fear my PC was infected from a virus.

I’ll try your suggestions as I return home this evening, hoping to solve the problem.
Many tanks again.

(of course other suggestion are wellcome)

My system specs are:

Win XP SP3
AVAST 4.8.1229
Virus database approx 01/2009 - I wasn’t able to update to latest database

I have no internet connections (i manually download and install updates)
My license is up to date
I have no active firewall

prego!

I think with those steps that I told you, your problems should go away and since you are not connected to internet it’s easier to get rid of any virus/spyware…

so, just before going home download all files and write them to a CD, better than flash-drive, because CD don’t get infected from any place.

things you may need before going home is “avast! setup file” , “avast! uninstall utility” , “avast! VPS update” , “Avira Rescue System”.

write avast! files in one disc and in another disc, write Avira, after download Avira , run it and it would write itself to disc and you can use it.

In addition to the advice Omid has given, while you are downloading files, get the latest Avast 4.8, which is 1335. Probably your old program version is part of the reason the updates don’t work.http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Add your license key.
  8. Download and apply the virus database update here: http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/vpsupd.exe
  9. Check and post the results.

Salut!

I second Tech’s advice which reinforces Tarq57’s comment.

Updating Avast’s build will help you in the long run as it’s not just the vps that helps in the virus detection rate. The engine adds new features and better performance to the anti virus as well.

Dear all,

I whish to thanks you for the replies, very usefull.

I have good news as I was able to restore the full functionality of the program.

These are the steps I followed (according to the reply #1 from Omid and reply #5 from Tech, many thanks!!):

  1. Boot with AVIRA CD (previously burned on a secure PC). Full scan with AVIRA to be sure to have no active viruses in the system. Allow the program to delete/move/rename suspect files on my system.Reboot.

  2. Uninstalled AVAST by the use of the utility aswClear.exe found in the AVAST website, disabling the auto protect mode in “options/troubleshooting” (I was NOT able to uninstall the software via windows).

  3. Reinstall the latest version available of the program and applied (successfully) the latest virus definition database.

I think (and hope) this little “protocol” can be usefull to many other people with the same problem.

grazie a tutti e ciao <<<

sorry for the poor english
