Unidentified sound advertisement and then system would not start up after.

Hello,

This system has been running fine (Although not sure if got infected before this) But earlier today something weird happened.

I had the headphones on and this like video advertisement was playing in the background (Just the sound, american voice) advertising something. I thought it was just firefox or something else left open, so I closed everything possible but it was still playing, looked in task manager but nothing there. In the sound device you could see the channel for it with the sound volume coming up and down but the device said “Unknown device” It went away but it come back about 3 to 5 times during the day just randomly, I thought I was going crazy.

The final time I realized it might of been malware, however I was thinking maybe it was some process just stuck in windows so I did a reboot just to see what would happen. Upon on reboot, I logged in with my password but windows got stuck on the windows loading screen after that for over 15 minutes. I tried again to boot up once more but to no avail. So I started up in safe mode and run a system restore. Not sure if this process was the wise thing to do but I just needed to get into windows to run the scans.

Anyway after the system restore, it was still a little slow at starting up but started up, so I run the scans. In general even after the scans the system seems a bit slow and there is HDD activity when doing nothing. Please advise me the next course of action and how bad the infections are. (The unidentifiedadvertisement has gone after the combofix scan/system restore)

Also I’ve noticed random files being placed in the partions, such as MBR.dat and these:

7556_134520052_MVM_3.tmp
7556_134520052_MVM_3.tmp

After cleaning they reappear randomly. Malwarebytes does not find anything but the others seem to have found some things?

Thanks in advance for taking a look.

hi JillyJolly,

A malware expert has been notified. Please be patient. For now, we wait.

Hi there I would like to take a different look at the MBR

[*] Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.

NOTE: If using IE8 or better Smartscreen Filter will need to be disabled

[*]Quit all programs
[*] Start RogueKiller.exe.
[*] Wait until Prescan has finished …
[*] Click on Scan

[]Wait for the end of the scan.
[
] The report has been created on the desktop.

Hi,

Log is attached.

Thanks.

The audio ads are a symptom of the Whistler MBR infection. But, I can see no sign of that at all

I will clear the temp files with OTL and once done could you let me know of any unusual problems at all

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/OTL_Fix.GIF

:OTL
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No CLSID value found.
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

All done, log attached.

I’m guessing maybe the scans cleared it up, (or the system restore) ? Other than that does the system look clean? Not saying those random files now.

Thanks again, appreciated.

Did you use Acronis to restore as that does a complete image backup including the MBR whereas system restore does not

Any other apparent problems ?

Used windows system restore. I’ll do a reboot and see how it is, but I guess maybe that’s something in system if its a bit slow now (Should okay I guess)

Right now it seems fine (booted up)

So the speed problem appears resolved ?

Would you like me to remove the tools ?

Still quite slow from logging in then on the windows screen (takes about 50-60 seconds to go to the desktop) but I guess that could be just the system in general? (windows) needing a clean/optimize.

Sure we can do that.

Thanks for all the help again.

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix
[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the “x” and “/”)
then click OK

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Misc%20screen%20shots/CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.
