Unremovable Virus?

I’m not that good at computers when it comes to viruses and protection stuff like that so that’s why I’m posting this. Every time I start Avast! during the Test of Memory and Startup a warning comes up. This is what it says:

A Trojan Horse Was Found! There is no reason to panic, though. Try to follow the given advice and links.

So I go down to where it says recommended action. It says to move it to a chest. Then the next time I started Avast! the same message shows up. So then I tried deleting it. Again the same message comes up. What should I do to stop the message coming up and to get rid of this Trojan Horse that I supposedly have?

There would appear to be another undetected/hidden element to the infection that is restoring the file.

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.

What is your OS ?
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).

  1. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version. Or Spyware Terminator Resident scanner (if you use this don’t install the toolbar or crawler or the anti-virus module). Or a-Squared free. I suggest trying then in order as the order that represents the better detection and clean-up. Some elements of the programs might not work if you have an older OS like win9x or winME, this is namely the resident protection in SpywareTerminator.

I suggest:

  1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
  4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
  5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  6. Make a HijackThis log to post here or, better, submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
  8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.
