After upgrading to avast 4.5 Home Edition, whenever the computer boots up I get a dial-up connection dialog. It appears shortly after boot-up, at about the time when avast makes its first check for updates. In Program Settings | Update (Connections), I’ve tried both checking and unchecking “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet.”
One of avast’s best features was the superb updater. I have installed avast Home on five people’s computers. Even on the two computers that actually use dial-up, avast 4.1 would sit quietly and then update automatically when a connection was made.
Now, with 4.5, at least on my own machine, we get this silly, pointless dial-up connection dialog popping up every three hours and needing to be cancelled.
The automatic check appears to proceed normally, and manual updating doesn’t bring up the connection dialog.
Manitoban, in fact avast scans each 40 seconds for an open connection. If succeed, update the virus database and will check for a new VPS update every four hours.
But the dial-up connection dialog should not pop up… :-
Can you go to your browser, choose Tools, Options, Connections and post how is it there? Never dial a connection or always use the default connection, etc.
Please post detailed configuration you have, and list some security programs that you are using… firewall, e-mail notification software, e-mail client etc.
As much useful info you give us, someone will be able to solve your problem… this way we don’t know anything about your system at all…
Are you using hardware router/firewall, are you on cable connection or DSL/ADSL. It’s important 'cause that way we know are you dialing to access the internet (DSL/ADSL) or not (If you are connected through your router, you have instant access to internet as soon as you turn on your PC)
Thanks for your interest, Technical and S.Z.C. As noted, avast’s updater worked perfectly in v4.1. v4.5’s updater appears to work fine, too, both automatic and manual. The only problem is that I have to cancel this darned pop-up continually. Technical, I did a manual update to 4.5.523 (from 518, I think it was), and then a clean re-install.
MY SYSTEM:
XP Home SP2
Athlon XP 2000+, 512MB, ASUS A7V8X, nVIDIA GeForce MXMX 400 64MB
ADSL, D-Link router, no dial-up modem installed
Opera 7.54, PocoMail 3.2, MailWasher 1.33 (email notifier), avast! 4.5 Home Edition, Sygate Personal Firewall 5.5 (2637), WinPatrol 8, Prevx Home v1 (intrusion prevention system)
Right now, I can only suggest that you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
Please, disable WinPatrol 8 and Prevx Home while doing that…
As you already did, scan with Ad-aware, SpyBot and a boot time scanning of avast.
Are you 100% sure that dial-up window is invoked by avast! ?
And what are your settings in those windows that DavidR posted up there ?
You also said:

So manual updating doesn’t bring that window… it means it’s working fine. I really never heard that someone had problems with that window poping out without any reason… I think we should wait till tomorrow, when Vlk see this thread. Maybe he has some clue what’s going on in here…

Nearly. Again today, I uninstalled avast and the pop-ups went away. Re-installed, and they returned.

Update (Basic):
Virus Database - Automatic
Program - Ask when update is available
Update (Connections):
"I only connect to the Internet using a dial-up modem" is UNCHECKED
"My computer is permanently connected to the Internet" - tried this CHECKED and UNCHECKED
scan with Ad-aware, SpyBot and a boot time scanning of avast
I scanned from Safe Mode with Ad-aware, X-Cleaner, and ewido. Nothing found. Neither avast nor the backup antivirus find anything.
Technical, you’re asking me to lie to my computer?
OK, checking “I only connect to the Internet using a dial-up modem” gets rid of the pop-ups. And manual updating still seems fine. However, it seems (according to firewall logs) to have eliminated the automatic check for update after boot-up. Oh, well.
Eddy, nothing untoward seems to be starting and running.
That’s wrong Technical… I don’t even understand how it can even work… He is connected through ADSL connection and he is using hardware router/firewall (I’m also using D-Link DI-604), so that means he doesn’t even have to dial to internet. As soon as he logs into Windows, he is ready to open Internet Explorer and browse internet… just like cable connection.
My advice (UPDATE basic) is to set VIRUS DATABASE UPDATES to AUTOMATIC, PROGRAM UPDATES to AUTOMATIC as well…
For (UPDATE connections) - uncheck first one and check the second one… your PC is permanently connected to the internet, because it is like that. Even when you turn off your PC, you’ll notice that your ADSL modem and router are still on and doing it’s job…
That’s how my settings are set and I never had such a problems Manitoban mentioned up there…
Another thing I’m worried about is this…
I scanned from Safe Mode with Ad-aware, X-Cleaner, and ewido. Nothing found. Neither avast nor the backup antivirus find anything.
What is your back-up antivirus and is it working in the same time as avast! ?
Thank you, everyone. Evidently, the thing that changed between v4.1 and v4.5 is the default setting for “Proxy” as described by Vlk in the topic suggested by ianb. It looks for now as though the problem is solved. I had to check “Direct connection (no proxy).” What a relief.
What is your back-up antivirus and is it working in the same time as avast! ?
Currently, BitDefender Free Edition. Only one resident or on-access scanner at a time, of course.
No problem, I knew you will solve your problem. We just need to calm down sometimes, set the ball to the ground, and we will find some solution for any problem out there…
I’m glad you are happy now.
