as a rather new user of avast 4 home (on Win2k-SP4, 56k analog-modem
although I have set both prog and VDF-Updating to automatic AND was online for about 1 hour,
avast only downloaded a vps update just when I explicitly told it to check…
in what intervals does avast check for an open inet-connection or , if PC is online, for updates ?
there are some timeout settings in data\avast4.ini which i don’t really understand, and which seem not to appear in the user interfaces…
So, as to the Auto-Update: is that correct, that avast checks every couple of minutes for an internet connection (if update is set to automatic), and then tries to check for updates ? or is there a timeout, if no inet is detected for a couple of times/connections attempts ?
I searched the board/FAQ a bit but couldn’t find much…
Please point me, if I missed it:-)
Thanks in advance…
Is it possible to ping these IPs from your computer? 195.70.130.34, 64.246.6.135, 207.44.156.15 and 62.168.45.69

avast! checks every 40 seconds if there´s connection to Internet and every 4 hours checks for new updates.

Yes.
If you use dial-up connection only, there´s another way how to detect if the computer is connected to Internet or not. avast! can elicit the connection status from the modem status - so it will NOT ping our servers every 40 seconds. To set avast! this way, follow these steps:
In Notepad, open the file AVAST4.INI
(C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL SOFTWARE\AVAST4\DATA)
Find section [InetWD]. If this section doesn´t exist, create it.
195.70.130.34 timeout (repeatedly, or Antwort von 213.210.132.114: Zielnetz nicht erreichbar./Target-Net not reachable)
seems to be “on your side”
213.210.128.0 - 213.210.191.255
netname: CZ-TERMINAL-20000502
descr: Nextra Czech Republic, s.r.o.
descr: Provider Local Internet Registry
64.246.6.135 works
207.44.156.15 works
62.168.45.69 works
But somewhen, there obviously has been a silent update, cause I got a new Vir-Database in the about-avast-window
so, seems to be temporary/generell conection problems.
P.S.: I connect via a german internet-least-coust-router-program (Smartsurfer/Web.DE);
so this still counts as “only dial-up connections” ?
and I guess, should try the useras=1 entry next ?
Thanks…
I have not experienced trouble updating avast on a dial-up system. I suppose that the problem resides just on the user provider (XP Pro and Modem at 56kps).
recently, with the default settings the auto-update seemed to work apart from my initial problems (see above).
now, a couple of days ago, I set USERAS=1 according to odpad’s/FAQ instructions (including reboot) and now again it doesn’t check for updates or on the PC getting online.
I had Defs from 8-14 in the about window,
and only a manual update (after 20 minutes of being Online) got me the updates.
How often does avast check now with the useras=1 settings ?
-I start the PC, and then after between a couple of minutes or sometimes longer; I go online (56K-Modem,Dial-In, LCR).
So I guess Avast’s first attempts to check for updates won’t work. Does Avast give up then maybe for 4 hours with the UseRAS=1 settings ??
I have blocked most incoming ICMP [8] - EchoRequests
But this can’t be the problem, as a manual update works ? or can it ?
I have read about using the “useras=1” command for modem users like myself and tried it on my machine with Win98SE/ZoneAlarm and I could not auto update either. I removed the command from the ini file, rebooted, and went back online and the auto update kicked on within 1 min. I don’t know if we are missing something or if it just does not work.
I`ve got a problem. I just did my new registration, but i am still geting te notice “comection timeout” which is realy going on my nervs.
What should I do???
Please help!!
You can increase both your avast! timeout: Internet Mail provider > Customize > Advanced (tab)
and your email account timeout (generally, right click the email account, choose properties and the Advanced tab of settings).
