Last encountered error: Can’t select any server for downloading (from 0).
I have searched the forum and found several references to downloading a server.def file to my setup folder, which I have tried several times and I still can’t update. Any other suggestions?
note… the problem might not be onlly with avast… I’ve noticed lately that some websites don’t refresh correctly. when I click the refresh button I get the same page even though I know the page has updated on the server. and, pages that are supposed automatically refresh every few minutes don’t get refreshed. the only way I can refresh them is to go to internet options and delete all the cached files, and then upload the page again. another note, i’m on Windows 2000 Pro if that makes a difference.
The servers.def file would appear to be corrupt or 0KB, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def . You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the original.
What is your OS and how do you connect to the internet ?
Just trying to see if there is any pattern to these issues with servers.def.

This part of the error '(from 0)' tends to indicate that your replacement servers.def is also either corrupt or 0KB. Or the original servers.def file is in place, when you copied the new on into the 'setup' folder did you get a warning 'do you want to replace original servers.def file' or words to that effect ?
If not the replacement isn’t in the setup folder.
Or you could try, delete the servers.def file and try a manual update, it should download another copy.
Or having deleted it try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
when I downloaded the servers.def file, for some reason my computer re-named it as servers.def.txt as it was downloading, so the original servers.def file was still there. it is very strange, because in the confirmation it actually says “there is already a file servers.def, do you want to replace it?” and it doesn’t say anything about servers.def.txt and I would never know without looking at the files in the folder. so I had to go and delete servers.def and rename servers.def.txt as servers.def and now all is well. thanks.
