Apologies if in wrong section .Since purchasing Avast Internet Security a few weeks back when I try to download Windows Defender definition file (KB2267602) which shows daily as updates available on start up , it fails every time .I have checked Windows Defender which is disabled , so should not be getting updates ? Most annoying seeing " updates available " every day and on checking it is only this . Any simple remedies or advice available for this other than uninstalling Avast ? I have tried various suggestions over the last few weeks to no avail , thank you for any help given .
Thought of that too , but unable to switch on .Get Error Code 0x8007139f which seems to infer it is caused by virus protection switching off Defender .
P.s
Tried temporarily disabling Avast and trying to no avail
" Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.windr\Logs\CBS\CBS.log .For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log .Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios .
Tried to view files but was unable , cant remember message that came up .Now getting out of my depth being a 70 yr old where computer skills are not my forte !! Read somewhere that Avast shuts off Windows Defender when installed , hence unable to reactivate and download updates to clear message ? Think I might have to bear it though very annoying .Appreciate all help given to try and solve this .
" You could always uninstall Avast, reboot, updated defender, re-install Avast. "
Did think of trying that but would have to do same every time any update available , thought I could have found another more permanent solution . May try later on returning from my daily walk , appreciate advice given .
This should not be a daily thing. I’m hoping that by allowing windows to be up to date and then installing Avast that the current problem will resolve itself.
Returned from my daily constitutional walk and removed Avast .This now allowed me control over Windows Defender which allowed me to update which I was unable to do before , even when temporarily disabling Avast .Re installed Avast and reactivated , all systems go ! Surely the boffins at Avast could make this simpler to overcome ? From across the pond , many thanks for help given .
Forgot to add , on re installing Avast , pop up box appeared saying a programme was trying to turn off Windows Defender .Confirms who the culprit was causing the fault .
Glad to hear that. There was never a doubt that it was Avast turning off Defender. In your case, it just left you with a problem which should not have happened.
Hi,
I realise this is an old topic but I’ll start here since I’ve got such a similar problem.
A while ago one of my computers wouldn’t boot after a Windows Update. I managed to roll that back and have done a bit more investigating into what updates had not been working. And one of the ones that seems to keep failing to install is:
“Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (V…”
I sought some advice and they suggested I turbined off the Avast real time protection. Whilst thinking about that I found this topic and, since it seemed to describe the same situation as I find myself in, I uninstalled Avast. However I couldn’t get Windows Defender to start, it gave me a message saying that the service couldn’t be started.
“The service couldn’t be started.”
I tried Windows Update anyway and my computer locked up, no response to keyboard, mouse or brief presses of the power button…
I realise that this forum may not be able to help with the Windows Update (but if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know) but I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get Windows Defender started again after Avast switched it off.
You either use Defender or Avast. That’s the reason Defender turns itself off when you install Avast.
One should never run more than one resident AV at a time. Doing so can cause serious problems.
If you want to turn defender on, you could set Avast to Passive Mode - It turns Avast’s protection off.
You can make that change in the settings under Troubleshooting.
I’ve uninstalled Avast as per the suggestion for getting KB2267602 to install but I can’t turn on Defender. I’m not trying to run both at the same time, I just want to use Defender whilst I get the Windows Update sorted out because it seems that Avast is interfering with that.
I don’t know if it’s something in the way Avast was set up or how it turned Defender off but I can’t get Defender to turn on. Maybe it’s nothing to do with Avast but since it’s Avast that was causing the problem with KB2267602 (or so this thread suggests), and that’s to do with Defender, it looks pretty likely.
I’ve removed Avast, run Avastclear and restarted the computer several times. Defender isn’t running. I’ve tried various ways to get Defender going but can’t seem to get the service started, I think.
Quite frustrating.
Sorry for the delayed reply. Is there anyway of getting notified if someone posts in a topic I’m interested in? ‘Follow topic’ or similar? (I think I’ve found that now)
You say Defender isn’t running, where are you looking, what have you tried ?
You don’t actually say what Operating System you are using ?
This is win10 related:
If you press the Windows key and type Defender, then click the Windows Security option, Virus and Threat Protection.
What does it say is your Antivirus is and are there any instructions/actions required ?
OS is Windows 8.1 x86
A little while after starting up there is a notification in the system tray that says “2 important messages … Spyware and unwanted software protection (important) Turn on virus protection (important) …”.
When I try to click on “turn on” a File Explorer window opens to the system32 folder, and the message is still in the system tray.
Or if I go Start → Control Panel → Action Center, it says “Windows Defender is turned off.”. When I click on “Turn on now” it goes to the system32 folder.
If I do Start → Windows Defender, it says “PC status: At risk” and “Your PC isn’t being monitored because the application’s service stopped. You should restart it now.”. When I click on “Start now” I get the blue circle for a while and then a message saying “The service couldn’t be started. This operation returned because the timeout period expired.” with an error code of 0x800705b4
I’ve looked in the registry and that seems to be correct. Some of the files in the Windows Defender folders have been replaced with known good versions. The problems with this machine first appeared with Windows Update and someone has been trying to help me. Whilst investigating that I found this topic and the OP describes a similar situation to the one I find myself in.
