update not working please help

When I go to click update nothing happens. I’m using Avast Home 4.6. The computer that we’re using is an AMD 375mhz proc, w/ 384mb, and 8gb hd. I’ve used Norton 2005 and an older version of Avast and haven’t run into this problem. We’re also using cable internet and auto updates are on.

Which firewall are you using?
Do you mean Norton Antivirus (NAV) or Norton Internet Security (NIS, a firewall)?
Did you uninstall Norton properly?

When you say nothing happens, are you getting any error/warning messages, if so what ?

Welcome to the forums, Tidalwarrior.

The problem most likely comes from the fact that Norton does not correctly uninstall. Many files and registry entries are left. These will interfer with any other anti-virus program.

But, there could be other factors as mentioned by both Tech and David.

Another link worth looking at which is a program removal tool, which can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

You could download this and run the removal tool and select your old Norton anti-virus program/element and reboot.

Thank you for your replies everyone. Yes I uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2005 properly. The firewall that I’m using is a hardware firewall built into a Netgear 54g router. When I click on it no messages pop up and nothing happens but I can still continue to use the program properly. I’ll try reinstalling avast. After I installed it I didn’t restart right away but instead I opened the program and entered the given product key. The reason I did this is because everytime I restart this computer it takes 10 minutes to connect up to the wireless network and get on the internet. Now if I restart can I use the same product key that I was given? Yea and as a last resort I may look into that removal program that was mentioned.

Even with a hardware firewall you need software to monitor and block unauthorised outbound traffic. This is an option on some hardware firewalls but not all.

I’m unsure of what you mean by properly, however, an uninstall using add remove programs often leaves registry entries, we see lots of this in the forums, remnants of Norton, usually of NAV. So if you haven’t checked for redundant registry entries, running the SymNRT tool won’t hurt.

I just looked on the win98se computer and the virus defintions are up to date. It most of auto updated at some point but when I pressed the button last night it and I waited for 5 minutes and nothing happened. It most be something to deal w/ the network connecting up so slow. I will defently keep that removal program in mind because I have heard people complain about how Norton leaves clutter behind. Norton’s products really just seem worthless to me. I don’t see why I need to pay 30 to 60 for there products anymore when there is something like avast out there.
