I see that avast have release version 6. That was quick I will say. So my question is can I update through GUI or a clean install is preferable since version 6 includes new stuff?

Of course, we tried to test all possible update scenarios so I’d hope upgrading from v5.x (or even 4.x) should be just fine… so it’s really up to you - either update or uninstall the existing version and install v6 from scratch.
Thanks

Yea,
I guess it all depends. Updating from the GUI or a clean uninstall. I’ll decide what to do based on a general consensus of this thread when the time comes. If you update through the program, your license settings and everything are held, correct?

Given the problems that occured with the last release is it okay to keep the current version for a while longer, as it seems to be running well now. Will detection updates still be available?
Yes, they’ll be available, but not forever. You’ll eventually have to upgrade sometime.
I used the AvastUI to update from v5.1.889. All settings and registration were retained. FWIW, the updated files are installed in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5 using this method on WinXP Pro.
If you do a clean install, the directory will be different reflecting the new install location.
All is working well. I’ve done a Quick and Full scan, and checked out the WebRep feature. All seems fine so far.
I updated through the GUI on my XP as well. No Problems.
HI I just thought I would let you now that I just updated through the Gui in avast 5. I would just like to say that I had no problems updating to avast free version 6 over avast 5 without any problems what so ever.
