Since the 28th of October, I have the following message when I run the VPS update :
“This VPS Database requires latest program version.
Please download and update program using full setup, then run vps update again.”
When I check the properties of the file “vpsupd.exe”, it seems that the version of the product is 5.1.0.0 and not 5.0.0.0 like said on your site.
I tried to download avast 5.1.0.0 like said on the error message but I can’t find it.
My last successful download of VPS update was the 17th of October and the version product of the file is 5.0.0.0.
As far as I know, 5.1 hasn’t been released yet and won’t be until the end of the month.
the website that you’re using is for downloading the program, not the definitions.
I don’t think they ever got a manual definitions download page running since they updated the program and website to version 5.
I guess you could connect that computer to the internet temporarily just to do an update, or possibly copy the update files to removable storage and bring them to the 'net disconnected computer.
Pondus, the OP’s problem is that the computer in question is not connected to the internet, and they just need virus def updates (well, program update as well) downloaded from a different computer.

The problem persists VPS online are in version 5.1.0.0 and I can’t update avast on a computer not connected on internet.
Did you try to copy the current vps on your online computer and the setup of .677 with the uninstall utility in a USB ? Then reinstall all over and reconfig all if you want…
In fact I just wait to known when a VPS update not in version 5.1.0.0 will be available for users of the current version of avast. It seems to be an error during the building of the VPS update.
Like there is a version for 4.8, there must be a version for 5.0 and perharps a version for 5.1.0.0 (version of avast not avalaible yet). As soon as the 5.1.0.0 will be downloadable I will make the upgrade. But I expect to be able to do the update on the version 5.0.0.0
So at the end I have solved my problem and I post this message for others hoping it might be helpful.
The answer posted on November 07, 2010, 02:21:03 PM by Mr Agent gives a clue. I have installed the latest version of avast without uninstalling the previous (I made an update in 5.0.677).
And then run the VPS update downloaded on this site (http://www.avast.com/download-update) and I don’t understand why but it works and it is the most important.
The version 5.0.677 date is 2010-09-27. My updates had worked since the end of october. The last files that worked had a signature version of product in 5.0.0.0 the first that had failed a signature in 5.1.0.0.
I will in the future not follow the instruction on the web page for VPS download i.e :
“Note: No reinstallation of the program is needed for virus database updates!”.
I think it may be helpful to notify to the users of the 5.0.594 version to upgrade Avast wbefore downloading the VPS update files.
I have version 5.0.677en my computer (without internet connection).
Download the official website of the Avast VPS update an internet caffe.
when installing on my computer I get the following error message:
THIS DATABASE IS OLDER THEN VPS Currently Installed. DO YOU NEED TO UPDATE VPS.
What is the problem?.
please help me. I’m infected with many viruses
