My computer is always on through cable internet modem. Today I keep getting a red box indicating an error: Cannot connect to server update was not downloaded. How can I fix this problem. ???
I suppose this does not happen after login, but all the time.
Can you follow the possibilities to troubleshoot update problems? Thanks.

Basically, check the log files (or post the last 100 lines of the logs):
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log -
Please try importing this registry fix http://public.avast.com/~forejt/Enable8dot3Name.reg (just click it), then invoke avast VPS or program update and perform the reboot when asked to do so. Does that fix the problem?
Also check:
-
If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired). Home (free) version need registering each 14 months.
-
If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
If you’re not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
Maybe you should ‘remove’ avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember. -
Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
::)Thank you so much. I feel a little “dumb”. I should have checked the firewall first. PC Tools Firewall was blocking access. I had placed Avast in allowed several times when it tried to block. Just removed PC Tools Firewall so now have everything up to date with my Avast Anti-Virus. Again thanks. pv
I’m glad that it worked… sorry for my last post… too complicated for a simple thing… sometimes the obvious and the simplest things rule 8)
