Updated Avast Internet Security to Latest Version and Lost Internet Access

Updated Internet Security to latest version on 2 Windows 10 computers last night and today. Once went fine the other did not. I ended up uninstalling IS so I could get access to the internet plus my machine was accessing my hard drive so much that essentially my computer was almost locked up.

Restarted in Safe Mode and removed Avast so I could get my computer working again.

Noticed something about VPN which showed up after the installation. I tried to disable it but it made things worse.

I take a dim view of any software update that blocks access to the internet and locks up my PC by accessing my hard drive.

  • Which version of AIS…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

I use a paid version of Avast Internet Security and have had it for awhile. Do not know which version since I have uninstalled it to get my computer up and running. I just clicked on it and it said there was an update available “today Dec 19th” and did it and it said I needed to restart which I did and the problems started. Did the same for the other computer which is OK.

Toshiba S70-A 64 bit Windows 10 laptop.

What’s the version on the other computer that’s not giving you a problem ???

Windows 10 PRO Version 1511 Build 10586.36

I am away from the other computer and will not be back home till late this evening but I will get the information on it then.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s)…!!

Then:

  1. Download Avast Internet Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

PS. One last thing. I do have an old version of Malwarebytes on my machine but I rarely use it and it does not run when my machine is running. It is probably badly out of date and I only use it occasionally to do a scan of my system to see if anything was missed.

This should have no bearing on Avast running properly. Most of us use Malwarebytes along with Avast. )
