Updates failing

Hi
I downloaded Avast Home ed. earlier today. It has tried multiple times to update, but the connection gets terminated before it finishes. ???

Is there any way I can make the updates work? I really wanted to use this program. I tried Avira Anti-Vir but its updates failed more often than they worked, so I uninstalled it. Could my firewall be stopping it? I use the free Comodo Firewall.

If you need more info than what I’ve given, just let me know.

First thing to make sure is that your firewall is allowing avast av. Perhaps add it to COMODO’s trusted vendors to ease the pop-ups.

Are any pop-ups appearing at all? If they are avast popups, be sure to allow them.

If all else fails, try to download the updates manually as a temporary solution. Get the updates from http://www.avast.com/eng/updates.html + http://www.avast.com/eng/update_avast_4_vps.html .

I’m not sure whats blocking your connection, so be sure to wait around for more experienced answers. My answer is only a temporary thing.

Initial Questions: What operating system do you have, and are you using the current released version of Avast, or the beta version? When you right click on the “a” ball in the task bar, and then select “Updating” and then “iAVS Update”, can you post exactly what messages appear on the screen up to the time the update attempt fails? What Avast shields do you have running and do you use Microsoft Outlook (as oppposed to Outlook Express)?

Have you seen any messages that indicate that the Comodo firewall might be blocking the Avast update.

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Wow…thanks for the quick responses, everyone. I am currently trying to save the update to my computer.

Ok…everytime my firewall pops up with a message about Avast, I always tell it to allow the request. The programs that Tech said should be allowed to connect, I manually added to my firewall’s list of trusted applications.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and Avast Home Ed. version 4.7.1201. I do not use Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook. The shields currently running are Instant Messenger, Internet Mail, Network Shield, P2P Shield, Standard Shield, and Web Shield.

When I look at the log viewer, this is all I can see:

Something is ‘hang’, I mean, the update process. Maybe you could kill avast.setup (ctrl+alt+del and terminate this process). But, maybe, an installation from scratch will solve it…

Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
Boot.
Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
Boot.
Install again the latest avast! version.
Boot.
Check and post the results.

Oh well.

I tried. The updates are still failing.
Anyhow, thanks for all the help, everyone. I might would keep trying, but I have dial up internet and it takes about 3 hours to download a 20 MB program. I don’t always have that much time online. I’m going to go find something else, I guess. Or if all else fails, I’ll have to pull out the old wallet and shell out some money for a full version of something.

Were you previously running another AV or did your computer come pre-installed with one?

A mature hacker hacks to try that was supposed to be amature
I take it you have tried the manual update by right clicking the “a” globe going to updates etc
still NG?
if so try a manual update and then temporarily disable your firewall
see if manual download starts
turn firewall back on
check version with “about” in “a” ball
try manual update
reboot
did update run on reboot?
check version after you have been back up for awhile- did it change?
report back

this problem has been fixed before- hang in there for the first of the week
you might also check out or post at comodo forum

Yes, I’d love to save my money so here I am to try again!

ok, my computer came with a free trial of McAfee which I used until the subscription ran out in June. Then I uninstalled it. I tried to download Avast and it wouldn’t work. Then I downloaded Avira AntiVir which worked for a while, but then the updates wouldn’t download correctly. So I uninstalled it and tried Avast again and this time got it installed. And then had the update problems I posted here about.

I am not on my home computer at the moment, but will see what I can do with the latest suggestions given when I get a chance. Also, thanks for the Comodo forum link. I will check that out also.

I don’t know what I did that made a difference, but the update finally worked!!! ;D

I reinstalled Avast, rebooted, and clicked Update. And it worked! Yay!

for future reference there is a tool on the ANTIVIR antivirus site that is similar to the registry tune up tools posted about above that is tweeked to help clean up after Panda, Norton, Mcaffee tools leave residue
of course use the vendors tools first, do all the reboots etc
leftover garbage in the registry is one of the largest causes of erratic operation
