Updates stopped working

I have been using Avast for a couple of years without any problems.
About 2 weeks ago I started getting error messages - Updates failed to download.
I tried manually initiating an update of the Virus signatures. It starts, runs extremely slowly, them aborts with an error that just says it failed to download the update.

I uninstalled Avast, then downloaded and registered a new version. The download and install both worked fine and the new Avast version is running OK, but I still get errors when it attempts to download updates.

I have checked my internet connection. It downloads files from other sites without any problem.
I am using the Free version of Avast on a Win7 PC.

Any suggestions on what is causing the problem ?

any third party firewall that is blocking avast from updating?

like comodo, outpost?

any other strange behaviour on your computer?

could be malware related.

do a scan with malwarebytes antimalware for a second opion

download install update and do a scan, and don’t forget to remove what it finds. a system reboot might be needed.
