Updates viral definitions become suddenly impossible with avast 4.8

Hello,

Among my computers, I have a old machine which I keep voluntarily for particular uses and on whom I use avast 4.8.1368 Family Edition since 2012 (if I am not mistaken, it is the only antivirus which is still compatible with Windows 98 SE)
Until recent date (in the beginning of September 2015), I had never had particular problem with this version.
Then I began to have an error message during the updating of the viral definitions with the software.
The download of the file of update quickly breaks off and the following error message displays :

“Avast! Antivirus Setup
Last found error. Insufficient space for treating this command”

As I did not have time to look for the origin of this message, I passed in the manual update by downloading the file of viral definitions from the avast site (Download Updates) and executing it.
At the beginning, it worked perfectly.
But since the end of September, the installation of the definitions fails systematically and the following error message displays after several minutes of work :

“Can’ t install VPS Update. Please, report following errorcodes :
Ver : 4.8.1368
SI : 0x00000005
ST: 0x00000008
LE : 0x00000000”

The last one update of viral definitions who was able to be installed is the one of 27/09/15.
The machine possesses 512 Mb of memory, it is not infected, the hard disk is not full and the key of license is valid until 01/02/16.
Is this problem already known for this version of avast ?
Did anything change in the files of updates of avast ?
If an expert of avast 4.8 could indicate me the cause of the problem and the way of remedying it, I would be very grateful to him for it.
Thank you in advance.
Cordially.

ClamWin still support W98 http://www.clamwin.com/
You need to add Clam sentinel for realtime protection http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net/

Hello Pondus,

Thank you for your answer.
I had already heard about the combination Clam Sentinel + ClamWin as security software which can works on a former computer equipped with a system as Windows 98 SE.
Two softwares to replace an antivirus, it looks like a little a gas plant which risks to consume too many resources on a former computer.
Furthermore, and if I am not mistaken, ClamWin does not become integrated into Outlook Express and it is exactly the customer of messaging that I use on this machine.
Besides, ClamWin would be incapable to scan files dbx.
How to make then to check the absence of infection on messages incomers in the messaging OE ?
If you have a brilliant solution, I am immediately interested !

What would have more interested me, it is to know exactly why the updates of viral definitions are not possible any more since the beginning of October.
The link which you indicate sends back to a subject in which we evoke a hypothesis, that of the size too important for the file of viral definitions vpsupd4.exe which would not be so feasible any more under Windows 98.
It is a little bit strange as explanation.
Windows 98 uses the system of files FAT32 which authorizes the processing of files until 4 Go. In my customer of messaging OE, the file dbx e-mails has a size of 3.6 Go and it does not prevent OE from working perfectly !
It would not be rather about a limitation owed to avast 4.8 itself, the designers of which did not maybe anticipate the inflation of the file 400.vps of viral definitions in time.
If it was the case, the problem could be possibly solved thanks to a corrective patch of the editor.
Still this one would have to be motivated to deal with the question.

ClamWin does not integrate with Outlook Express.

The limitation/problem is not with the Windows 98 (SE) or the used file system, but with avast 4.8.
There is nothing (as far as I know) that we as users can do to make it work.
avast 4.8 has reached it’s end of life, so don’t expect a fix for it from the developers.

I don’t know your system specifications but perhaps (although support for it has ended) updating to Windows XP is a option.
It seems to me you are not using any heave resource applications on that system.

  • Install XP
  • Remove all not needed/wanted components
  • Tweak it for optimal performance

no surprise about limitations when you have a OS that should be on a museum

How to make then to check the absence of infection on messages incomers in the messaging OE ?
Check with your mail provider, they probably scan all accounts for spam and virus at the mail server, most mail providers do

you can also check it using this test
http://www.emailsecuritycheck.net → does not work on Free mail like Gmail / Yahoo / Hotmail …
http://www.aleph-tec.com/eicar/

There is ofcourse also the option to use online mail if your provider supports it.

Hello Pondus and Eddy

Thank you for your answers, your contributions and your suggestions.

My comments:

1 - I possess other computers with more recent operating systems. But if I keep a computer with a "OS which should be in the museum ", it is voluntarily and for precise reasons. As a consequence, the solution is not to install Windows XP instead of Windows 98 SE
2 - because that there are few chances so that the editor of avast develops a fix so that the updates of viral definitions can continue to be installed under Windows 98 SE, I am going to have to resolve to use ClamWin and Clam Sentinel as palliative with the inconveniences which it contains
3 - It will then be necessary to find a solution for the customer of messaging OE (maybe a software of filtering allowing to examine messages before loading). You should not too much count on the FAI to stop the threats. Mine already has a great deal of difficulty in fighting against the spam ! As for the webmail which he proposes, he is very badly convenient of use and that is why I use it that in case of absolute necessity, only when I am not on my own machine

The future looks complicated.

Ofcourse it is your own choice what OS and other software you want to use.
But why using OE on 98(se) while you have other systems where you can handle mails ?
As Mr. Spock would say : “That is not logical at all captain”

Why keep using a old version of OE on a old OS?
That doesn’t make much sense.

Please elaborate on why you want to do so.
If we know, we are perhaps able to assist you better/more accurate.

Using webmail (if possible) from that system is a lot safer than using OE.

Why using OE while there are a lot of better/safer mail clients that run on W98(se) ?
