I installed the Free Version yesterday. I see there is no place to schedule an automatic update or I can’t find it nor see it. So I hit the update button this morning and I then told that there is an “Error: can not connect to server”. Is this usual?
Avast updates automatically for definitions
There are also streaming updates, does the maintenance page show updates being conducted
A screenshot would help:

The virus definitions updates are set to Auto, so will check when you first start the system and then every 4 hours, so there is no need to schedule it. avastUI > Settings > Updates gives the general update setting information. Scroll down and expand the Proxy Settings section and set it to Direct connection (no proxy) rather than Auto detect.
This may not change anything (but is the best option if you don’t actually us a proxy) as it may be something blocking avast.
What is your operating system and firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
NOW this is busting my cherry…this is the first time I tried this snipping thing. But here it is…:
Looking at your screenshot reveals that both the VPS and Program need updating.
The easiest way to accomplish both is to simply click on Update Program.
Once it’s done, allow it to reboot as requested and you should be fully updated.
But that it the rub Bob, the problem is about being unable to update, which needs to be resolved in order to be able to update.
Tried multiple times more. Here is a snip of what it is saying. I even went into the firewall and added Avast tot he list. I am running Win7 Pro with a Netgear Wireless Router, hard wired to the desktop.
check avast update settings… see settings in avast top right corner
try direct connection, no proxy
any change?
Ironically, while you were typing that suggestion…I was playing around in that area and YAHOO…I changed it to Direct Connection (using IE) and it worked. Is it OK to leave that way or should I change to Direct Connection?
use the setting that works for you.
A BIG thanks to all for the responses and HELP… ;o)
