[s]Are you aware of any free software program[s] which automate the updating process?
Free Personal Software Inspector from Secunia maybe?
What are your recommendations?
I got a W8.1 machine.

Why is most of your post crossed out ???
How to automate the updating process on a windows machine?

Update for what ?
Hi Eddy! If possible I like to automate the updating process for all software programs such as
drivers, ccleaner, avast, mbam, etc.
I have run ccleaner which lists my current programs. [see attachment]
Best, Hermie
Read the crossed out content on the first post, that should give the answer.
Okay. Any alternatives available, if so, which?
Best, Hermie
What you want is not possible.
Many applications already check automatically for updates.
e.g. avast, Windows, Browsers.
Next to that there are tools (avast has it) that check for updates for certain applications.
It is not possible to check for updates for all applications.
A bit of advice, leave driver updates well alone unless you are having issues with the driver. As they say if it isn’t broken don’t try to fix it.
The avast software updater monitors programs that are at risk should they become outdated, generally these are programs with an internet presence, browsers, email programs, etc. and those popular programs most likely to attack.
Outside of that there shouldn’t be too many programs requiring immediate update. Monitor the >>> UPDATE <<< topic in the General forum https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=9671.0.
For the most part I don’t allow programs to automatically update, just notify. I have never sought to automate the update process as I like to be in control of my system. There are services that you can subscribe to that will ‘Notify’ of updates and then you choose what to update and what not.
Not a program for automatic updating but is still close to that: https://patchmypc.net/
Useful to keep your programs up-to-date and remove security vulnerabilties from your system as they arise. Choose the ‘Free Tools’ option. I run it from an usb drive.
What is nice about it is that it will automatically find/update supported insecure or obsolete versions of your program(s) all at the same time.
I’ve found the Secunia tool is not really being actively supported by Secunia devs, it seems. So it is not recommended for that reason.
