Hi every one !
Just trying to figure out what’s going on with this…
On speedtest.net with avast scan off i got :
12 Mb/sec down
500 kb/sec up
with avast scan on i got
11 Mb/sec down
800 kb/sec up
The reduction of download speed rate is clearly because of my slow processor scanning all incoming traffic…
But the 300 kb/sec gain with avast on is a mystery to me…
Does anyones have an idea about this ???
I wouldn’t put the increase down to avast, but I would imagine there are times when even your upload speed will give a different result.
Whilst the download speed is likely to be a little slower, exactly what that is partly down to the web shield scan, your processor, possibly RAM, but I would also say the internet traffic flow is also very inconsistent.
I get some strange results when using speed tests, being on dial-up I get about 5KB download and frequently they report an upload in the 100s of KB which is clearly wrong as even with a v9.2 modem the max is 43Kbps upload. So these speed tests aren’t so reliable either.
ok thank’s.
I understand that speedtest may not give a perfect rate.
I’ll keep making tests anyway later today and tomorrow and i’ll post my results.
avast does not scan upload traffic… so, other things should be interfering.
I’ve made more and more test…
It is now clear that with avast scan ON i almost double up my upload speed from 450-475 to 800 Kb/sec.
I also use windows defender and ZoneAlarm firewall…
I wounder if windows defender scan the upload traffic when avast is OFF and do not when Avast is ON.
I’ll try it a little bit later and post the results…
Anyway there’s no issue here only good news !!! Just trying to figure out how things work…
Thanks for all reply’s and if someone else experience the same… post results too…
I dont trust the speed testers either, while most of them i’ve looked at / tried rate the local cable providers here as superior to my DSL, I have seen much faster pages on my computers than the ones connected to the cable services, this is even including the demo machines at their headquarters.
As for up / down speeds, I have also found my machines at least equally fast when downloading large files ( such as SP2 for win XP ) That particular download takes me 15 minutes, I have seen it be that fast, and then again take 1/2 an hour on the cable systems here, as I have did this on mutliple PCs.
With this being said, I do keep up well on my system maintainence, and have all my computers tweaked to perform the best way I know how.
I think Windows Defender does not scan http traffic. If any, it will scan the download one not the upload.
I do realize that those speed test aren’t that good, but anyway i still get a double up upload rate while Avast scanner on and this with many test…i mean constant same result and doubling up isn’t a small differnece… so there is something here interesting… I’ll make more test when i’ll get time for it …
