URL: Mal warning keeps popping up

Hi!

I’m getting a consistent URL: Mal warning when I’m on Chrome–I’ve tried using three different anti-viruses to get rid of it, but I can’t seem to. There have been about a dozen other adware programs I’ve managed to get rid of, but I still haven’t stopped the redirects I’m getting.

Attached are the logs requested in the sticky–if you need anything else, just let me know. Thank you very much in advance for taking time to help me out; I sincerely appreciate it! This is an incredibly annoying infection. I think I picked it up when my sister tried to download FaceTime from a disreputable site.

Hi could you try the other browsers and let me know if it is only chrome that is affected

CAUTION : This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

CreateRestorePoint: CHR HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google: Policy restriction <======= ATTENTION BHO-x32: No Name -> {0E8A89AD-95D7-40EB-8D9D-083EF7066A01} -> No File BHO-x32: No Name -> {FFFFFFFF-CF4E-4F2B-BDC2-0E72E116A856} -> No File 2015-02-24 23:24 - 2013-10-12 23:19 - 00000000 ____D () C:\ProgramData\34BE82C4-E596-4e99-A191-52C6199EBF69 C:\Users\Michael\jagex_cl_runescape_LIVE.dat C:\Users\Michael\jagex_cl_speccollect_LIVE.dat C:\Users\Michael\random.dat EmptyTemp: CMD: bitsadmin /reset /allusers

Save this as fixlist.txt, in the same location as FRST.exe

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/FRSTfix.JPG

Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

THEN

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

[*]Close all open programs and internet browsers.
[*]Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
[*]Click on Scan.
[*]After the scan is complete click on “Clean”
[*]Confirm each time with Ok.
[*]Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
[*]Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

It looks like it only affects Chrome–before I got rid of the other adware it was on the other browsers (IE, and Firefox) as well.

Alright–I ran the fixlist, restarted the computer, scanned it with AdwCleaner, and I still haven’t gotten rid of it.

Attached are the logs as well as screenshots of the warnings I’m getting.

Chrome is infected, could you fully uninstall, reboot and then re-install

No luck, Essex. I still get the warnings, and it still says the process is Chrome.exe.

By the way, you aren’t familiar with the gaming group “Duchy of Wessex”, are you?

Do you have Chrome set to synch ?

Nope, not part of any gaming group

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I’m still getting warnings. Things are running a little faster, though.

I’m still only getting warnings on Chrome. Firefox seems to be fine, although it looks like (from my limited knowledge) ComboFix found something on Firefox as well.

My logs are attached. Can you explain a little what’s happening here? Why haven’t we been able to nab this thing?

Chrome has recently become very susceptible to malware altering the programmes files and trying to find which one is difficult.

Could you run Chrome in incognito mode and let me know if the alerts still appear

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95464?hl=en-GB

Yes, they are still appearing. It took about five minutes and after that I started getting them consistently.

OK we will need to do a full uninstall of chrome

Re-install Chrome

  1. If you have bookmarks, let’s save them by exporting them - Export Bookmarks
  2. Then I need you to go Google Sync and sign into your account
  3. Scroll down until you see the “Stop and Clear” button and click on the button. At the prompt click on “Ok”
  4. Now we need to uninstall chrome. Note: When asked about user data or settings you must remove this also so please check the box.
  5. Restart the computer and reinstall chrome, You can download The latest version from here - Google Chrome
  6. Import your bookmarks back into Chrome
  7. Sign back in to your Chrome browser so that your bookmarks sync with your online account.

Nope. Still no change. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, and I’m still getting the warnings as soon as I open up Chrome.

Any other suggestions? I greatly appreciate your help on this, by the way. I’ve gotten rid of over a dozen other infected files along the way, so at the very least we’ve accomplished that so far.

And it is definitely only chrome when you get this alert. No other browser

Do you still get the alert in incognito mode ?

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95464?hl=en-GB

Yes–it is only on Chrome. I haven’t checked Internet Explorer, but I don’t get the alerts on Firefox.

Yes, I still get the alerts in incognito mode.

Could I have a fresh FRST scan please

Here’s the fresh FRST.

Could you let me know if this stops it

It still hasn’t worked. I made a mistake, though–I opened Chrome after running the fixlist and restarting my computer. I didn’t see the rest of your message.

Nevertheless, here are both logs. If you’d like me to redo this step I’m happy to.

This time, it took about ten minutes for the warnings to come back. They resumed as normal after that.

Sorry to trouble you with this for so long. I sincerely hope we can fix this because I’ve been having problems with my credit card being used electronically on the other side of the country–I don’t know if a virus like this can get that sort of information from me, but it’s still troubling to have something you don’t want and can’t get rid of on your machine nonetheless.

OK I would like you to fully uninstall chrome using the previous steps to backup bookmarks

  1. If you have bookmarks, let’s save them by exporting them - Export Bookmarks

Go online using firefox and IE do the alerts still appear

No, I have never gotten any alerts one either IE or Mozilla. I’m still not getting any alerts on either IE or Mozilla. Attached are the logs.
