USB Key Initiates a second HDD...did I format it wrong?

I am a licensed user for Avast 5 Internet Security ;D . Also, I know this is more along the lines of support for hardware, but I am simply concerned about recent activity on my PC running said Avast 5.

Every time I insert my USB key I get the usual addition of Drive F:, but today I also got an additional HDD showing up called Drive Q:. There is no size and it does not go away when I remove the USB stick, but only after restarting.

I am concerned that Autorun has possibly infected me, as Avast brought to light 1 out of 8 infections come via removable media. How concerned should I be?

Is there a way to fix this, its never happened before? Also, I used unlocker to view the files attached and they are all Virtulization.

Screenshots attached.

Welcome to the forum. Here is an explanation of the program in question:

Microsoft Application Virtualization Client – SFTLIST.EXE

Sftlist.exe installs with the Microsoft Application Virtualization Client. The program was originally created by Softricity as part of a program called Softgrid. Microsoft bought Softricity and inherrited all of their programs. This progarm is most commonly used by IT professionals who need to install programs on several systems. So if your computer is in a workplace setting, check with your IT professional before removing this file. You’ll find more information at http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/appv/default.mspx.

So what if Im on my home PC?

I am running Vista Ultimate x64, but I am not running any ‘virtualization’ programs…other than when I plug in the USB key. I did recently wipe the key…probably should not have wiped it but just reformat. If this is the reason, where would someone point me to go fix this? Either way, this has never happened before, just the F: drive would show up. BTW…this all started occuring after disablinjg Autoplay in GPEDIT.MSC.

Could this be an attack on my acorss my network “…by IT professionals who need to install programs on several systems.”…to affect all my machines? Or is this from the latest update? Or are my USB key’s both done? What more information can I provide to help with diagnosis since I am NOT on a work network…and also am the system administrator for the home network I am on?

I also see from the URL you posted that Office 2010, which I recently decided to try. Could that have anything to do with this problem, and why then just when I insert a USB key?(sorry to ask HW related issues, but if you cant answer can you at least point me in the right direction in understanding this if its just HW related)

Okay…so I was overly concerned about some crap Microsoft Office uses. The problem is that we no longer get a choice about connection to the internet with their ‘Click To Run’ app. This sounds like a virus to me, only problem is that its not considered that because its in their ToC’s to use their Office product. I should start writing some ToC’s for companies…good money in forcing your thoughts of security on them. Like when you have a problem with MS Update and they tell you to disable your Antivir and firewall…WTFREAK? Ask them to disable THIER fireall and Antivir so we can update and see how they feel about that!!!

Anyhow, sorry to take up forum time with a problem from trusting and installing Microsoft products. Looks like Imma stick with Office 2007 8) if this is the requirement to running Microsoft Office 2010 and I cant unistall or disable ‘Click To Run’. BTW…I even used the add/remove programs and it said to uninstall this product the following will be uninstalled and told me MS Office 2010 Home and Student, and yet this seems like a more useful feature for Office professional users…who actully get the option to not use it!!!

If you know of a way…

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE PM ME A METHOD. I DONT TORRENT SO PLEASE DONT SUGGEST ANYTHING IN THAT NATURE. LEGAL SOFTWARE ONLY HERE!!! 8)

In Office 2010 just disable Click to Run Updates.

I don’t know what you use office for but you should check this out (no email client though, i.e. Outlook).
http://www.openoffice.org/
And… it’s free.

Maybe Im a bit on the nervous side, but I just dont like software that any Tom, Harry, or Richard can get hold of the code for. Its why I never bought into Firefox being all that secure…that was just a promoted thought that has long since fallen to the side.

Thank you though

Are you serious…this will COMPLETLY disable the Q: drive, and the Click To run functioning…or just the updating of the Click To Run module? Ill try again, but I dont know how healthy it ios to keep adding and removing Office from my system.

Alos, why isnt that solution posted anywhere else? Awesome deal if it works, being on the Avast forum first!

Thank you as well, because I admit I really enjoy the functionality and the UI of it all.

As a precaution, put your memory stick in and run an AV check of Drive Q.
