Nice article with some useful info! Thanks, bob!
I used to like the old blackviper.com site which listed all XP services and recommendations for each service depending on your use, games, etc. unfortunatly it stopped being developed.
Thanks a lot Mr Bob.
I had a lot of stuff going on that didnt need to be going on. 8)
Cheers Paul
I liked Black Viper’s page too DavidR. According to Castle Cops fora he moved house to Northern California in September and AFAIK intends to re-open his domain when he’s settled. His tweaks are still available thru’ Major Geeks here:

Thanks Bob! Interesting pages.
Or if you just want it as a reference, just save to a folder for easy access minus the clutter…!

this simple app allows you to disable services/close ports that are known to allow worms in:
In my search for the optimization of XP, I came across Game XP. I wonder if this is a good tool but the company also offers a nice app called Safe XP. Also, I came across quite many of posts complaining resource-eating security tools ruin game experiences.
Those all in one tweaking tools include alot of useless tweaks and quite a few reduce performance by disabling or reducing the effectiveness of prefetching.
You have to be very careful carelessly disabling Services.
The Server Service is not just for shares, with that service disabled you can not properly manage permissions and user accounts.
System Restore has no negative effect on performance and is a very good safety net to have running.
Security Center is a very good service to notify users of the status of their Firewall and AntiVirus programs.
If you have a peer to peer network setup at home you want to leave the following running:
Computer Browser - improves network performance.
Server - necessary
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper - Helps resolve computer names on your network.
Workstation - necessary
As Mastertech says, these ease of use apps, which I introduced as an option, are nice but use them with caution. You may like to manually disable services and see if their systems/apps on them are still doing their jobs.
Personally, I manually disable services and I haven’t disabled the services on Mastertech’s list except “Security Center,” of which I think I know what I am doing. An odd thing, tough. Kerio 2.1.5 recognized no TCP connection work while “Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing” was disabled, which wasn’t the case with Kerio 4.2.x. After noticing this, I am quite happy with good old Kerio 2.1.5 with XPSP2 Firewall disabled, of course.
Talking of dependency, I think Linux GUI provides users information nicely although I don’t think Windows can be replaced by Linux at least at the moment.
