I am currently using avast! I have a cable modem and I usually access the net threw my AOL account. My AOL security center is always telling me my computer security status is “poor.” How do I know if my avast! is working correctly?
I get a message everytime I log on that my avast! has been updated so I assume it is working. Can I also use the AOL spyware/virus protection along with the avast!? Because when I run my AOL computer check/update it tells me that it recommends I remove avast! in order for the AOL security settings/programs to work properly.
Unfortunately I am not very “computer smart” so if replying please reply in laymans terms! :
AOL considers your security status poor because you aren’t using their product. The best thing you can do is ignore their self-serving advice and stick with a good AV like avast!
Avast!, in combination with Ewido, AdAware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster and a good firewall will server you well.
It is never wise to have two resident AVs installed on the same system as they could cause conflict that may lock-up your system as they fight for control if they both detect a virus.
Take mauserme’s advice and ignore AOHell’s Security Center advise or turn it off if they let you do things on your own and stick with one of the most flexible, configurable AV solutions out there.
If you are using aol’s security center, which is an optional installation (AV, firewall, and anti-spyware options), you have two resident AVs.
I access the internet through my aol account, but have not installed any of the security center features, primarily because I prefer a good AV with good support. I have found avast to be an excellent AV with excellent support.
btw, avast is recognized in my aol sign-on screen (in green, with no warnings), so the security center is probably telling you your security status is “poor” because of a conflict between the two resident AVs.
AFAIU, avast! just stops its shields asa it detects a conflicting software. I wouldn’t advise any anti-spyware decision as they are VERY bad at searching for threats and they are highly non-effective.
NO! Nothing of a kind!! I said anti-spyware decision. avast! is an anti-virus, if I am not mistaken, sir. Anti-spywares are Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, A2 and etc. avast overcomes ANY of them in detecting spyware. Alas! some other antiviruses are more effective in this field
