Various Programs Crash

First it was Firefox, which is running now, but now I can’t open iTunes or Open Office. Other programs open slower than they used to. I’ve repaired Avast! already, so now what?

Edit: Firefox is crashing again.

Well I uninstalled Avast! and reinstalled it from 5.0.677 because that’s what cnet has, and now the programs work. I am going to uninstall Avast! again and install 5.1.864 fresh and see what happens.

Avast! is installed. Firefox is working, OpenOffice is working, iTunes still crashes unless I run it as administrator? For now I’m okay, and I’m sure problems will be fixed in newer versions.

Also, is Threatfire necessary now that the behavior shield works?

Scratch that last post. Firefox not working again. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 won’t work, now I’m pissed , lol :). Any advice? I’ll send any files or reports you need.

I thought it was that programs needed to be run as administrator, but that doesn’t help either.

So if I understand you correctly, you now have the latest release version 5.1.864 installed on your sytem??

Yes, and that’s when my programs started crashing.

I’m not fully experienced with W7 64 Bit, but I am curious to know if you did a Clean install of .864 and use the aswClear.exe (Avast Cleanup Utility)in Safe Mode, before Reinstalling latest version (.864)?

I uninstalled Avast! normally, rebooted, ran the removal utility, rebooted again, then installed Avast! again. I had read that safe mode was only if you had problems uninstalling.

There is no harm running the tool in Safe Mode and from my experience(again with XP) it does clean remnants left behind by previous versions. It is recommended to run the tool separately for each version that has been installed on a System ie. 4.8/ 5.677 etc.
If this is something you don’t feel comfortable with then maybe your course of action might be installing the last version that worked and one of the evangelists with 64 Bit experience will certainly help you.
Sorry :-\

Alright, I’ll reinstall 5.0.677 and wait for a more stable version. Thank you.

wait a sec ;D
using x64 OS as stated in your signature, is that correct? I know only about crashes at 32-bit OS, 64-bit crashes would be something new for me…

I'll send any files or reports you need.
please install 864 build, when you get a crash in Firefox or iTunes, don't click OK, keep error box displayed, run Task Manager, go to Processes tab, find firefox.exe, right-click, select "Create Dump File", compress & upload that file into our ftp, thanks a lot!!

Bad Company 2 works great over here, build .864… I will say this though, i tried Threatfire a few times and i am sorry to say this but i haven’t come across a more buggy program in my life. Slowed my machine down to a complete crawl. And i am not the only one with this experience, many other Threatfire users(now former users no doubt) have reported the same thing. I suggest at least temporarily trying to run your system without it and see how it goes.
