vBoxDD2GC.gc ?

Hey guys! It’s my first time posting on the board, so hopefully this is the right category.

I am currently running a Comodo scan on my computer (tried running Avast first, but my computer is still acting bizzare - extremely slow, 30-40GB of space are missing from my hard disk drive without an obvious reason - and I have a suspicion that it didn’t catch all the malware…).

The scan is currently at 59% percent and one of the threats it discovered are two files:

Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\ng\vbox\VBoxDD2GC.gc
Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\ng\vbox\VBoxDDGC.gc

Are these real threats or are they parts of the Avast software? I’m not sure how I should proceed with them once the scan is 100% complete.

Thanks for any tips and answers!

well seems you are learning something new today

Why Using Multiple Antivirus Programs is a Bad Idea

if you want a extra scanner, that you can use alongside your AV, Malwarebytes is highly recomended https://www.malwarebytes.org/

if you want a malware check by one of our malware removal specialists, follow instructions here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Thanks! I was hoping that disabling active protection would be enough, but I guess not.

I have tried running Malwarebytes as well, but it didn’t find anything. The Comodo scan is now 74% in, and it has also found a file called background.js, so I’m trying to find info on that - although the only extensive sources I can find recommend me to download some shady virus removal software…

I guess I will wait till the scan is over and then just follow instructions in the last link you gave me.

Thanks!

I guess I will wait till the scan is over and then just follow instructions in the last link you gave me.
scroll down to Farbar Recovery Scan Tool ... run as instructed and attach the two diagnostic logs

Ok, so it took me a little bit longer than expected.

Here’s what happened since the last time I posted:

  1. The Comodo scan reached 100%, and, aside from what I’ve already mentioned, it also said that the winlogon file has been modified. I opted to repair all the issues automatically.
  2. I uninstalled Avast in order to avoid possible software clashes. After the uninstall, I tried to reboot my computer and it would not get started.
  3. I tried Windows Startup Repair, which did not find a solution, and also did not provide any info about the reasons the computer would not startup.
  4. System Restore.
For the restore point, I chose 1AM last night, when I updated my network adapter driver (via Device Manager) - Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-N 7260.
However, among the options, there was a possible restore point on 5AM (when my laptop was supposed to be on “sleep” and I was asleep myself!). It did not occur to me to write down the name, but it was another driver (which I did not recognize) update.
  5. My computer is still slow, but this time I was able to run the Malwarebytes scan with more success, it found 5 files - see the attached log.

Ah, also perhaps it would be useful to mention that over the past month my laptop has been (sometimes) freezing immediately waking it from sleep mode - not reacting to anything and showing exactly the same view as before going into sleep mode. At that point Avast did not discover anything.

Let me know if this has an affect

Save this as fixlist.txt, in the same location as FRST.exe
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

THEN

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

[*]Close all open programs and internet browsers.
[*]Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
[*]Click on Scan.
[*]After the scan is complete click on “Clean”
[*]Confirm each time with Ok.
[*]Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
[*]Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

It did have an effect - running the fixlist freed up 31.2 GB of space on my hard drive, and Adwcleaner removed some more unwanted files. Thanks!

How is it behaving now, any problems

Nope, and the running speed has definitely improved! I will post again if something comes up.

Thanks again - really appreciate the amazing response times on this board.

In that case methinks I will send you on your merry way

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove tools

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/javara.JPG

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/CryptoPrevent.JPG

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Unchecky

Click on the link above to be taken to Unchecky.com
click the very large Download button.
click Save
Click Open folder
Right click on the Unchecky_setup and choose to Run as Administrator
Once open click the Install button.
Then click on Finish
Unchecky is now installed and will help you keep unwanted check boxes unchecked, this is a fire and forget programme

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

I didn’t know that about Java! I’ve removed it and hopefully this will help to prevent any further infections. Thanks for the help once again (haha) and bye!
