vbs: malware gen

So yesterday (2/21/2017) I was surfing the internet and all of sudden there is this popup from avast and it says my computer is being infected by vbs: malware gen. So as usual I did a boot time scan and it ended up all my personal photos for the past 6 months. To make sure that my laptop is safe i run the antivirus again and it showed more files have been infected by this virus. I did a search online for this virus and got some info and again it ended up deleting a lots of files more than 1500.

Today(2/22/2017) morning I was searching for articles where anyone was facing this same problem and here it is the vbs: malware was avast false reports. Great good work Avast I lost most of my pictures to which I will never ever have access to. Again very good work.

But since you have a outlook.com mail account with free OneDrive backup and with installed OneDrive app you get auto backup of selected folders

So your pictures are saved  … or did you not use this option :-X

Yes I did. That’s how my pictures till June 2016 got saved. Avast deleted almost all my photos. Darn.

I don’t know why phone stopped uploading my pics to one drive.

have you changed password? try force a sync in onedrive phone app

Nope. Well I will make sure it backs up all the time. Anyways next time I will make sure to contact antivirus provider before scanning big time.

This morning I clicked a Bleeping Computer link in this thread about “Unstoppable JavaScript Attack”, right after that the Avast alarm went off and a pop up said it blocked two “VBS:Malware-gen” files.

A quick Avast scan detected many more such threats including “Need for Speed High Stakes” saved files and the severity was “high” (and mind you the program hasn’t been used on the computer for a very long time already). I told Avast to “do nothing” on these files.

If you browse the forums for VBS:Malware-gen you will get plenty of insight.

Absolutely huge topic about this (presumably related) false positive, which has been corrected.

Update your VPS if you haven’t already done so.
