Version 5 Not Allowing DOS Program Execution

After hopefully solving the numerous BSD problems with the aswSP driver replacement, I now find that the new version (Internet Security 5) prevents a DOS program from executing properly. Under Version 5, I get a program error message saying some files are missing. Uninstalling Version 5 resolves the problem and there is no problem under Version 4.8 Any solutions?

What dos programs are you using and what OS are you running?

What’s the exact message you get?
No such problem appears here…

You are not reading the details of my post. The message I am getting is unique to the DOS program (Managing Your Money Version 12) which is somehow being interferred by avast! Internet Security 5. The message that is displayed by the DOS program says that the program doesn’t ‘see’ all 14 of the necessary data files which are actually there. The key to this is that uninstalling Version 5 clears up the problem in addition to the fact that Version 4.8 doesn’t produce the problem. I am running Vista 32-bit with a fully updated computer.

I’m not reading the details because you didn’t supply them
“I get a program error” doesn’t necessarily imply that it’s a private message of the program, already running; looked more like the program cannot be started at all to me.

Anyway… it would be very helpful to be able to reproduce the problem… but I assume this program will be rather hard to get anywhere these days.

Agree, the English langauge never seems to be detailed enough. Please accept my apology.

Luckily it is the only DOS program that I use except for all those still good DOS line commands. It has the database of the contents in my house which I have refused to re-type all of data into another database. It is hard to comprehend what Version 5 may be doing to prevent successful operation of the DOS program. I have tried adding it to application rules with no success. Running it in the Sandbox was not a solution either. I will agree that the support of DOS within the Windows environment is a long lost cause so maybe it is time to bite the bullet and start putting my data into Quicken Home Inventory Manager.

Why Version 5 is somehow not allowing the computer to see all of the necessary data files in my DOS program is hard to comprehend. The DOS program does start but immediately displays a message saying there are missing data files (no files are missing). I have tried putting the entire path/folder in the File System Shield Exclusions, tried to start the DOS program in the Sandbox and turned off the various Real Time Shields - all to no avail. As stated previously, Version 4.8 produces none of this behavior. Any suggestions for Version 5 greatly appreciated.

I’m afraid it’s really hard to suggest anything if we can’t reproduce the problem…
I suppose it wouldn’t be possible to get that program from you, so that we could check?

Sure no problem other than I have to create a clean database by removing all of my personal data. I’ve attached a zip file (actually PKZIP) which you should be able to extract. (I am a little unsure of how PKZIP works as compared to the Windows zip compression files, if it is a problem I can send you a self-extracting file.) The zip file will extract the program files and a folder that I’ve named DATA that contains the 14 dbs (database) files. The executable is MYM.EXE although it would be best to use the DOS shortcut I’ve created which is the file mym.pif (or as a shortcut titled MYM). The pif file will avoid the full screen, close on exit and all of the other problems associated with running a DOS program in a window rather than as a command prompt (which could be used if desired). Using a computer with avast Version 5, the program will start but display an error message saying “DATA doesn’t contain all the dbs files we need…”. Look in the DATA folder and you will see that all 14 files are there. If you start the program using a computer with avast Version 4.8 or anything but Version 5, you will get a display “Welcome to Managing Your Money 12.0” with the current date being displayed, hit Enter and the program will continue on. You terminate the program with a ALT_X. F10 is used as an enter key a fair number of times. MYM was the forerunner to Quicken and Money. Let me know if you have any problems and what you might suspect is the problem in using Version 5 with the MYM program.

I see the board will not allow me to attach a zip file with a size of 1.7 M so I guess you will need to send me your email address which is hidden on this forum (or a server to which I can ftp the file).

Thanks for the interest in this problem.

Thanks a lot for your help - let’s hope the problem will indeed reproduce here.
Our FTP server is:

ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming

(no read/list rights there, only create/write)

I uploaded the file MYM.zip Didn’t see anyway to identify it so hopefully you can separate it from whatever is uploaded into the incoming directory. Let me know if I can be of any assistance on the investigation.

As I somehow expected (and was afraid of), the problem doesn’t reproduce here… I start the program (either using the PIF file, or from the command line) on Vista 32bit… and it just starts. I tried to rename one of the files in the DATA subfolder - and yes, then the error message appears.

So, are you saying the stopping the File System Shield (or even all the shields, using the avast! tray icon) doesn’t have any effect on the problem?

Well that adds to the confusion! Not only does the DOS program not work on my computer but it also fails the same way on my wife’s computer, different computers but both under Vista 32 bit. I have stopped all of the shields on my computer with no solution. I wonder if the replacement driver I received from avast could be a difference? I reverted back to the original aswSP driver on my computer but it (again) ends up giving me a page fault in a non-paged area (blue screen). Can you tell me anything about the aswSP driver? Her computer did not have the page fault problem but did incur random BSDs over time so I had replaced the aswSP driver on that computer under avast Internet Security 5, version 5.0.377 which is the same version I am currently using. I reverted back to avast 4.8 on my wife’s computer so checking the driver replacement will take some time to reinstall Version 5 (unless you think that will likely be a waste of time). Thanks for the effort but as you surmise, something is ‘different’ on my two computers wrt Managing Your Money.

I suggest to try the build 393.
I don’t think there were any changes related to DOS scanning (though I think the same for 4.8 → 5.0), but the BSODs should hopefully be fixed there.

You’ve earned your pay for today! Updating to Build 393 solved the problem, the DOS program is operating. I will now go an reinstall 393 on the wife’s computer and bring everything back into the same configuration. Again, mucho thanks as we say in Texas.

Please note that v5.0.393 is not official yet so I’d suggest to wait before deploying it further. There will be an official program update soon that should have all the fixes from v393 in it.

I had the same thought since I had noted that exercising the program update in Version 377 was always telling me that 377 was the latest. No problem waiting for the developers to complete their exercise. I had filled a ticket on the DOS program problem so I am not sure if there is anything I need to do to ‘remove’ the ticket. I haven’t received any ASE-#MQQ number so I have no way to really close the loop but I had assumed that they were very busy preparing an update so I was waiting for that with my fingers crossed. Thanks again, really appreciate the effort.
