Version Update failed--Repair Failed

I update manually. I have no choice.

Update <…\vps-9051600.vpu> failed.

The “Warning Log” line is:
5/17/2009 3:47:39 AM a 1444 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x000004C7, dwRes is 000004C7.

I tried to repair, and this is the result minus certain information I’d rather not have public, but the OS is Windows XP Pro.

My question is whether I can just wait for a day or two until the next version is released and update with that without any problems. I don’t intend to do any Net surfing until a new update is in, if one of you pros think this will work.

Unfortunately I cannot set my updates to auto, by the way. It’s a long story. Must be done manually.

I might also add that uninstalling the Alwil programs files and doing a reinstall is a very serious difficulty on my system, so if I can skip this update it would be so much better.

So what do you think? Will the next update work fine if I just skip this one?

And thank you in advance for any assistance.

EDIT: I just realized something. Was this a virus database update that failed? Or a … well that size is rather big. I’m not sure what a new “program” is called, but the other update that installs something other than a simple virus database update. In other words, am I looking at a much bigger problem than I thought when I first posted this.

Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
The updates are incremental, if you lose one, the situation will be corrected in the next one, no problem.

Appreciate the response.

Just to be sure, you want to look at the log just for today’s incident, right?

Since I finally got the new installation done a few months back, this is the first time I’ve had a problem.

Just today’s right?

Yeah.

Okey-dokey, but I’m again removing system info and IP stuff – sorry.

If you are a sharp reader of that log you’ll see why my arrangement is odd. The temp folder is on a different drive from the program files. But it’s been working, until today.

Anyway, if you think it looks like I can just wait, that’s what I’ll do.

Again, appreciate the help.

Please check if the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def is displayed correctly, it should contain [servers] on the first line.

You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder, disabling the avast self-defense module first.

Also, try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.

Let me give you the first few and the last few lines.

As for disabling the self-defense module, that’s a no-can-do on my system. last time I did that all heck broke loose. If the …\servers.def file looks okay, I’d rather just try for the next update.

I think I know what happened today.

If the Avast popup window displays, or tries to, while I’m updating it’ll mess everything up. You’d understand if you knew what kind of system I’ve got here. It’s very strange. Let’s put it this way, even Bill gates wouldn’t recognize this setup. Not now.

Anyway, what’s your opinion on just waiting for the next version?

Servers.def seems ok.

Do this…

Okay, this is weird. I’m on another computer and looking at the “Summary”.

Did the “Direct Connection” bit.

During the download I got the same Windows balloon.

Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Unable to save all data for …

But the download continued and now I’m looking at the “Summary” window. Here’s what I’m reading:

Information about current update: Last encountered error: The package is broken.

Total time: 20:42

-Vps: Already up to date
(current version 090516-0)

Server: a691 sm.avast.com (174.133.38.50:80)
Downloaded files: 4 (24,538.64 KB)

So I should assume this was a success and somehow I got past the Windows Write Failed error?

Or has the Avast computer been tricked into “thinking” it updated me?

Hah, this is fun, eh!?

Not!!

Anyway, what do you think. Dig up some log info now?

I don’t know. The system froze and I just killed the power. Probably will get an auto disk check when I start it up. I think the Avast computer was fooled. I don’t think I am “up to date”.

I’ll check the logs after I get the stupid machine started up again.

I smell an uninstall/registry clean/reinstall job coming. Bummer.

EDIT: Computer started up just fine. Little “a” ball was spinning around in its merry way and maybe everything is okay. I’m opening the browser right now … and … yep the little “a” ball looks as happy as can be. I guess I’m okay. I should go find an infected file, eh? Really test it!

Right click the ‘a’ blue icon and choose About.
Which is the virus database (VPS) version?

Yep. Looking at it now.

Compilation date: 05/16/2009
File version: 090516-0

Hah. I love it! Take that Bill Gates!! “Delayed Write Failed” eh!!!? Not this time!!!

Thanks for the assist, Tech.

Now if you can help that lady get her regsitration key to fit the lock, you’ll have another fan.

You’re welcome.
