Hi folks. A friend got me hooked on Avast and on my machine it is running fine. But on my wife’s we are having a problem. I suspect it is because her monitor/video card combination is DVI-only, but I don’t know for sure.
The details:
We installed Avast on her machine, removed Symantec and rebooted. The screen was looking fine, showing the Windows startup log, then as the system loaded, the text went screwy and the screen went black. It has been running for about six hours now with no indication what might be going on.
My best guess:
Assuming it is doing its first boot scan, since her video card drivers wouldn’t be loaded, I am guessing we can’t see what is happening because her monitor is connected through the video card’s DVI cables. She has no onboard video, nor is there a VGA/D-Sub connecter on her video card. So, either it is scanning her hard drive, it is locked up, it has found a virus and is hung up waiting for us to decide on whether to delete, put it in the chest, etc.
The computer specifics:
Windows XP 64, AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000, GIGABYTE GA-M55SLI-S4 AM2 Motherboard, EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB video card
