Virtual Device Driver error

Well, I installed your program and since then I started to experience problems with my PC. I started to get a blue death screen while starting my computer. Due to this I uninstalled your program. And after that also, I am getting errors related to your program while installing and uninstalling many other programs on my computer.
I am sending you the attachment of the error message and some of the technical questions you required:
• What operating system are you using? (e.g. Windows 2000 Server…)- Windows XP Home Edition
• What version of avast! are you using? (e.g. 4.0.160 - you can find this information in “About avast!..” dialog) – Avast 4
• What version of VPS file are you using? (e.g. 0303-10, 04/15/2003 - you can find this information in “About avast!..” dialog) – 0417-1
• What is your basic hardware configuration? (e.g. Intel Pentium III 800 MHz, 128 MB RAM) Intel, P 4, 2.0 GHZ, 632 MB RAM
• How do you connect to Internet? (e.g. dial-up, using proxy server, using firewall…) LAN connection
• What is your e-mail client? (e.g. Outlook, Outlook Express, IncrediMail…) Outlook Express
• Do you use some other security software? Which one? (e.g. Norton Antivirus…) Norton Antivirus 2004 professional
• What are the steps to reproduce the bug again? While installing Microsoft Plus! And using Yahoo! Messenger and installing and uninstalling many other software
• Do any error messages appear? If yes, what exactly do they say? Yes, you can see the attachment

Welcome to forums and thanks for very detailed system info. I think you’re the first one providing it in such detail  It’ll help us much.

Anyway,i think that the problem is this line:
• Do you use some other security software? Which one? (e.g. Norton Antivirus…) Norton Antivirus 2004 professional

Follow these steps:

  • Uninstall Norton Antivirus (Its not good to run two antiviruses at once anyway)
  • Uninstall avast! Antivirus
  • Download avast! External Control from my webpage www.security-ops.tk
  • Run avast! External Control and scroll down to Norton Antivirus 2004 Cleaner and use this function (make sure you first uninstall all antiviruses mentioned above)
  • Install avast! again

This is it. I think it should do the trick. Also reboot system when certain program asks you to. Give me note if this worked

Thanks for ur speedy reply. Well, this error I even got when Avast was already uninstalled. And the solution you have told me is to remove Norton. What if i dont want to remove norton, instead I want to remove Avast. Please dont mind.

Thanks for your help.

I am waiting for reply.

Well in eather case you’ll have to reinstall Norton, because VDD registry key is corrupted (thats why its not good to use more antiviruses simultaneously because they might re-use eachothers shared things like Virtual Device Driver (VDD) ).
Reinstalling (or Repairing if you have option) Norton should do the trick (it will most probably restore the VDD entry).

But i recommend you to stay with avast! Its better

Thank you again for replying. I will do that. Bu after that I wont get that DLL error no. I am not able to install and uninstall many programs due to this.

I agree with RejZoR… If you need help to correct your installation and VDD Registry keys… just let us know. Wellcome to the forums

P.S. I won’t say avast is better than NAV because I even know what is NAV? ;D
Joking: I used in the past (like tons of other users here) and, of course, I do not regret changing it for avast 8)

Thankx. I surely need help to uninstall and correcting VDD problems. I will apperciate any help you can give.

  1. Download the application that ‘cleans’ the Windows registry after NAV removal. You can find it into Symantec support pages. I don’t remember the link anymore. There is a tool for removal your specific version of NAV. Save the file to disk.
  2. Download the RejZoR’s application. Save the file to disk.
  3. After this, try to be only off-line (un-connected) as you will be without the antivirus for a while.
  4. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > NAV > remove
  5. Boot.
  6. Run the application downloaded in 1
  7. Boot
  8. Use RejZoR’s application to correct VDD Registry key.
  9. Install avast
  10. Boot
  11. Use your Registration key to start avast!
