Do you actually mean installing a VM, or installing Windows on a VW?
Re-reading the thread I think you mean the latter although your original post implies the former.
To clarify: are you having a problem installing a virtual machine on your computer, or installing Windows on the virtual machine?
I suggested Linux because your original post implies you can’t run a VM.
If, in fact, you don’t have an installable copy of Windows, then you won’t be able to run Windows in a VM on Windows or Linux.
I am not familiar with Windows for students and why it is not installable. How did you install it if not from the disk?
What I did when I installed Windows on a VM was to download a Windows installation ISO and use that because I didn’t have my original disk. I then entered the key from the bottom of the computer to make it a legal install.
Would this be an option for you?
Which version of Windows are you after?
A quick web search suggests legal copies of Windows 7 ISOs are available.
These would be ideal for installing to a VM- you could then use your key to get a working installation.
My interpretation of the request was to run IE in Linux, Not running a VM of Windows within linux.
As far as I know, IE does not run on a Linux installation.
The original psot looked like it was asking to run a VM without Windows:
If she was actually asking to run IE in a VM, then you need Windows to run IE in a VM, on Windows or Linux.
Looks like there is a solution from Microsoft:
Microsoft has created some customized Windows VHDs with the purpose of allowing web designers to test websites in Internet Explorer 9, 8 and 7, for free. To make it easier to set up, xdissent has created a Mac OSX / Linux script that will download the required files, extract them, install the latest VirtualBox guest additions and so on.
What I am trying to do is run a Virtual Machine on my computer So to this end I downloaded free VMware program. I have a disk for Windows XP and a disk for Windows 8 but both these disks are student copies, which are not full copies of each respective program. They are sold at a discounted price. When I get to the instruction to load the OS disk it then tells me I can’t use the disk as it is not a full copy of the program (or similar wording, forget exact wording but that’s the gist of it).

Yes I would think that this would be an option. I’ll try it and see if I can do this. Thanks!
