Virus blocking internet and cuts off the firewall

Had my computer closed for about a week, when I started it avast! updated itself. Everything was fine and sunny, suddenly I started getting malware reports: Win32 web-dialer or something. Then internet was blocked and avast! restarted the combuter, did a scan (where a lot of crap was found, I moved it all to chest, something was in the windows folder, I guess it’s there something went wrong) and then it booted something. The computer is otherwise fine, but I can’t access internet and I can’t put my firewall back on after i mysteriously was put down… This is really wierd for me, I don’t know what to do… If I move all the stuff I have on the computer to another computer, can the virus move with it? Otherwise I guess I have to boot the comp. or has anyone else some good ideas? Really need them now!

 Hi :

Would be helpful if we had more info, such as the name
of your Operating System ( if XP, is it SP1 or SP2 ? ) and
the name(s) of your security program(s) and if you ran
any of their scan(s) and what was the result !?

P.S. I think you have something more serious than a virus.

Maybe…, most probably…
Better is to know, besides what SpiritSongs asked, the name and the path of the infected files, the name of the virus besides the dialer.
Generally, dialers aren’t that bad and we can get clean of it, depends…

Hi Sekosen,

When Windows forewall is brought down, it’s never possible to put it up again with a 100% guarantee of security: a good third party firewall like Zone alarm or Kerio is a much better bet.

To recover you internet connection, try running WinsockXPfix:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

I recommend you run a thorough malware scan before installing the firewall. Install and update the following programs (if you don’t already have them,) download the firewall of your choice, disconnect from the Internet, run scans with all, install the firewall and come back online.

 Thanks, I’ll try some of that. Operating system is XP. Haven’t got any other firewall than Windows, just it and then the this anti-virus program. It has worked fine until now… Gee, I’m no computer expert, but I’ll try to dig up some more details about the virus and problems occured and tell more later. But thanks alot for these replies!!!

To restart windows fire wall try this

If the computer is really clean and you are referring to the XP Service Pack 2 Firewall :

Start>Run cmd [enter]
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]
Follow prompts and reboot.
