Virus Chest Problem

Hi all,
I just downloaded Avast 4.8 three days back.I moved all the viruses to the Virus Chest.There are a few files that I do not want to delete.Is there any option by which my file can be healed or made free of the virus?What does ‘Refresh’ do?I would be waiting eagerly for your replies.

Take Care,
Deepti

Hi, welcome to the forum.

The virus chest contains four categories: Infected files, User-added files, System files, and the overview category, All chest files.
If you haven’t added any yourself, User files will be empty. System files contains information about some files that belong to the OS, this information can be used in circumstances where a repair might be possible. They should not be modified or removed.
The “Infected files” section is the one the average user will be concerned with.

In answer to your question, about “is there some way the file could be healed” the answer would be “not usually.”

It depends on the detection, the file name/s and full path/s of the original files detected. It is possible for Avast to repair a certain number of system files, depending on the actual virus affecting them.

More often, detections are for elements of trojans or worms etc. No repair is possible; the entire body of the file is malicious. “Repairing” it, in this case, means quarantining or deleting it. And normally,those would be the only options presented.

One common way for this to occur is to download a free version of a normally “pay-for” program. This type of application often will have a trojan embedded in it. No repair is possible.

@Tarq57,

Thank you so much for the information.This is really helpful.I now know that a repair isnt possible and why.Thanks again for taking out time to reply to my post.

@Tarq57

I read your reply again and I could get what the last line of your post says.Please explain.

Thanks,
Deepti

I read it that downloading cracked or warez applications often will have a trojan embedded in it. No repair is possible.

Yep, pretty much what YoKenny said.
(Or, put another way, you get what you pay for. Karma. $#!t happens.)

@Tarq57

LOL,Thats was a good one.I wanted to make sure if every free version of a ‘Pay for’ application has a Trojan embedded in it.And I’m pretty much sure that it does,now:).Thanks for the info again.

Hello. I had a quick question about the virus chest. I heard there is a way to right click on a file and send it to virus chest. Can you do that and if you can, how? Thank you.

Absolutely not. Avast Home edition, for example, doesn’t contain a trojan. But this is a legitimate program that is intended by the software manufacturer to have a free version.

What I am referring to is a pirated program that is normally paid for, being offered for free. Quite likely to contain malware.

Best open your own thread for that, please.
