I’ve tried repairing the installation, rebooting PC but my software won’t update definitions.
What else can I try?

What virus definition is being reported if you Right click on the avast tray icon and select About Avast ?
Are you getting any other avast related messages about this ?
Can you post a screenshot of your defs sub-folder, see attached image of mine.
