Virus file cannot be deleted from Virus Chest.

After running a full scan with Avast 7 a Trojan was reported and secured in the Virus Chest. It appears that there is now no way I can delete a file that is in the Virus Chest yet I am sure that I have been able to carry out this option before.

Avast 7
Programme version; 7.0.1466
Definitions version: 121018-2

Windows XP SP£ and all updates.

What is the file name and its original location ?

What reason is given for not being able to delete the file ?

You should be able to delete files in the chest, but only after at least a few weeks in the chest without any adverse effect of its being in the chest. Then only delete after scanning it within the chest and it still being found to be infected.

Thanks for the reply.

The filename is given as msconfig.dat. The original location is given as C:\documents and Setting\KEN\Appplication Data.

Suspect file identified as Win32:Zbot-PRC[Trj]

At the moment I do not appear to be able to do anything at all with Virus Chest files as there are no available options. Even the ‘Delete’ file option in the Scan Log is greyed out. I am seriously thinking of uninstalling and trying a fresh install.

Ken.

i think you may be doing something wrong here… could you attach a screenshot of the chest?

Will be out for a few hours. Will reply later, thanks.

Ken.

I have no msconfig.dat anywhere on my c:\ drive so I suspect it is masquerading as being associated with msconfig (a legit process). This file when you do a search for it is associated with many malware hits.

I take it that it is still detected when you scan it in the chest (or aren’t you able to do that) ?
How long has this file been in the chest ?

Try a repair of avast (may possibly resolve chest issues):
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to/should reboot after the repair.

Have tried repair - makes no difference. File has now been in the Virus Chest for about 24 hrs.

Virus Chest Screen Shot attached as requested by other Pondus.

At the bottom of the VC screen is the usual scrollbar but nothing else.

You should certainly leave it there longer:
There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

As for the problem of not being able to do anything in the chest, what errors are you getting ?

Assuming you aren’t getting any errors, but you can’t do anything because there are no action buttons ?
There doesn’t need to be anything other than a scroll bar as you select a file in the chest and right click on it and it gives a number of options, was that what you were doing (I suspect not) ?

Ooops!. I suspect not as well. I had completely forgotten the right click option. Tried it and, of course, the option menu I was looking for pops up with no problem. (Schedules a session of self flagellation in penance.)

Will leave the file in the VC for a few days and then delete it.

Thanks guys for your suggestions and help - problem solved.

;D

You’re welcome.

Easy to forget when avast has lots of options.

If your having a whip round I’m sure there are many that will chip in a few lashes ;D
