Virus found, Avast boot scan restarts computer

Today I noticed that my browser was directing me to ad sites, so I did a virus scan. While Avast was loading it showed me two viruses. I can’t remember what they were exactly, unfortunately. I did remember googling the file and a site popped up, with information that the virus was first reported Jan 28, 2010. It had a j in it, that’s all I’m sure about, and it made numbered .tmp files, one which showed up in task manager and one which avast reported as a trojan. Avast detected two files: the first one had the “j” in it, and the second was the numbered .tmp file. I moved them both to the chest.

Avast then recommended that I schedule a boot time scan, which I did. However, this is where the trouble started. When my computer boots up, I see the Windows XP logo load, and then a flash of a bright blue screen, the screen goes blank, then the computer reboots. I’ve tried safe mode, and the exact same thing occurs. I don’t seem to be able to get onto my desktop. I tried to shut down the computer, waiting and restartarting, but the same thing happens.

I’ve only ever disabled my antivirus once, and that was for a phone upgrade on Jan 25 that required me to disable it. I had forgotten about reenabling it until some time later… that might have been when I got the virus, though I don’t recall visiting any “bad” websites during that time. In hindsight I should have disabled my internet for it as well, but now it’s too late for that…

I would appreciate any help anyone can provide me on this matter. Thank you. If this is the wrong place to post this, I apologize.

Edit: I just noticed the “disable automatic restart” option, and this showed up as the error:
“STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xB84EB380, 0xB84EB07C, 0x8A61F805)”

I’ve googled that and found something similar to what I’m experiencing so I’m going to try that and if it works I will link to the other site and possibly close this topic.

It could be that the virus has damaged an important system file. If you have an operating system disc, try booting from it and looking for a ‘repair’ option.

Yes, it turns out the ntfs.sys file was affected some way and it’s been repaired.

It booted up fine and is running Avast now. Finding quite a few viruses though… I’m ashamed, I’m going to seriously run weekly scans from now on. TGIFS.

Thanks for the help

also run Malwarebytes

MBAM http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
update and run quick scan, click on “remove selected” after scan to quarantine anything found and restart

Thanks for the advice. I’ve run a scan and it found quite a few objects and gotten rid of them.
