Virus - the name keeps changing

Ok, my Avast scanner popped up while stagnant on a web page (www.greyhoundsmakegreatpets.com). I’ve been on this site for months and never had a problem.

It gave me a win32:xxyxx.dll [trj] then 15 minutes later win32: sdryxx.dll [trj] and then another random set of letters .dll with [trj] after it.

I closed firefox and checked IE, sure enough, someone had checked the work offline, so I am sure someone went elsewhere using IE and picked this up earlier in the day. IE is currently checked offline again.

So far I’ve run Ad-Aware and it removed a 3 instances of ad ware and another random lettered .dll [trj] No warning have popped up yet, but I am pretty sure I am not “clean”

I am operating windows XP service pack 2

Page seems clean… maybe a false positive…

I suggest:

  1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
  4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
  5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest AVG or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  6. Make a HijackThis log to post here or, better, submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
  8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

Your Java version is out of date, which allows drive-by infections.

Run Secunia Software Inspector as Tech recommends.

Ok, after disabling resotre, running avast! scan and installing and running superspyware blaster and running AVG antirootkit. (nothing found with AVG) Here’s what Hijackthis gives me for a log. I’m now off to immunize and intall secunia. Thank you again!

Updating Java is critical.

Check out the Secunia vulnerability reports for Java 1.4.x and you’ll notice several very serious ones:

A vulnerability has been reported in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a vulnerable system.

The current version of 1.4.x is 1.4.2_16, and you have 1.4.2_3, so your computer is still vulnerable to attacks using these vulnerabilities, even though they are not marked in red at Secunia.

The Secunia Software Inspector will confirm this and give you a download link to the latest version.

You should also go to Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Sun Java.

Apart from that, the log looks clean. I guess Ad-Aware did a good job!

It’s a shame that Sun does not make an installation process that asks for uninstall the old versions… :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Java. It kept getting hung up during the “update” so I finally just removed and re-installed. What PItA.

By the way… It was a real PEBCAK moment before I realized I would have to uninstall and install.
