Virus updates and software updates not working on 5 Free

I have the free version of 5. I had a virus a few weeks ago which Avast did not catch. After many boot scans, I at least got the computer back to working. Since then Avast has been unable to connect to the virus update server. I just uninsatlled it, used the uninstall clean software you guys offer, then reinstalled the latest 5 free version. I am getting the same issue. It is not updating the virus information.

Suggestions?

Set your proxy into avast settings to none (instead of automatic).
Try again.
