Vista Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) doesn't work with Avast 4

I took a lot of time trying to enable ICS over wifi with my mobile phone.
My network connection are follows:

a) Ethernet connection to Internet (ICS enabled)
b) Wifi connection (ad-hoc mode)

At first, I always failed with an error stating “No gateway response” at my mobile phone.
After a long period of trial & error, I decided to turn off the avast! home edition and give a try.
Once the avast! is disabled.
I’m now able to share the internet connection over wifi at my mobile phone.
I think some adjustment in avast! setting might able to resolve the issue but I’m not able to locate it.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Otherwise, I might need to explore other anti-virus solution.

Eh, no offense. But this sounds like a huge pebkac error.

a) Ethernet connection to Internet (ICS enabled)
Etherner connection means connection to a network throug adapter. ICS doesn't mather since you are only trying to connect one system to the internet and not 2 using the first one to allow the second one the access through the first ones connection.

When confronted with such a vacuum in the universe of clue, the only way to classify the problem is PEBKAC. Don’t know what PEBKAC is? You may be experiencing an ID-ten-T error. But because we’re feeling generous today, we’ll help you out. PEBKAC = Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair.

Thanks for nothing. I’m sure he was aware that he was having a problem before you illustrated it.

I’m having a similar issue. trying to setup internet connection sharing on a Laptop using it as a router. cell phones and aptops are able to use the wifi connection on the “router” without Avast but not with it enabled.

@ the OP:
ICS issues come generally from firewall configuration. There was such an issue with Comodo a long time ago, the issue was reported and they fixed it. If not, then check your windows network settings. You must explicitly allow other computers to share your internet connection, ie connect through your machine. I personally would opt for a separate connection on each machine to the router, but may be you have no choice…can’t you connect your phone directly to the router?
I can’t see how avast can interfere with that, no firewall in V4. May be the network shield blocks ICS…try to deactivate it and see what happens.

Hello,
Thanks for the reply. Don’t want to steal this dudes thread but it appears it wasn’t going anywhere and I found it while searching for elp on a relevant issue.
I think maybe I need to explain my situation a little better.

I have a laptop wired to our Cisco switch using the Enet port. I have this connection Shared (allow others to connect to the internet through this connection)
I have the wifi port on the laptop enabled and have started a service to allow connection to the laptop using wifi devices.

I have another laptop (the one I’m currently using) going through the WIFI port on the server laptop to the Net. when I enable AVAST (4.8 home edition) on the server laptop I lose the ability to connect to the internet using wifi devices.

Is there a setting that I need to enable to allow the ICS to work? port that needs to be enabled etc…? I’m clearly not a networking pro but then again If I was I wouldn’t be here asking for help.
Thanks.

I don’t run avast 4 but 5 beta, so I can’t check V4 settings… see if there’s something related for ICS in the program options (ie not in the shields options)…but I don’t think so. Otherwise as said can’t you try to deactivate the “network shield” (this time in the shields options) and see if that changes anything…

I’ll give it a shot in the morning. I’ll also re-enable things until I lose the connection. I think that’ll get me started as to where to look.
Thanks for the reply.
