VISTA Windows mail hangs could it be AVAST

After lauching Vista Mail an error message panel indicates:

Script error
Client ADS is undefined

Do you want to continue yes or no

Pressing yes or no has no effect. The Windows mail program is stack. The only way to recover is to reboot the computer.

Help will be very much appreciated

If you disable Internet Mail provider from avast, does Windows Mail work?
The message is very strange and seems not from avast.
Do you have in the past any other antivirus in this computer?

Further investigations shows that the system hangs on one particular message. In the past messages from the same sender had a avast warning message indicating that the message was suspect and in that case I was able to accept the message.

I am wandering if this warning message is treated differently now.

I have upgraded to the latest AVAST program and Virus Data base.

After deleting this message without opening it it worked ok.

Attached are screen image of the error message and program status.

I am not been able to save all logs in a single file. There was nothing particular in the log.

I have not look in the event log of Windows VISTA.

What have worked? The avast scanning?

And?

There was at installation a Norton AV which was replaced by AVAST in March 2007. AVAST and Windows Mail worked OK since then.

The deletion of the message allowed to continue to read other messages without crash.

For safety, I have cleaned the registry with CCleaner, upgraded AVAST to the latest avaiable programs and virus data base.

Will see how it behaves.

All this is done remotely via LogmeIn as the computer is located in Maroco and I am in Switzerland. This makes the intervention a little bit difficult for reboot for example

Man, you can believe how Norton left things behind… please, use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.

It’s a very weak registry cleaner. For sure it won’t remove Norton leftovers…

Congratulations. I have LogMeIn but use very rare…

I have excecuted the Norton removal tools.

Further investigations show that the scritpt failing to execute is an Internet Explorer script (the icones shows it). Further, the blocking occurs with MHTM messages.

This means that AVAST has nothing to do with the problem. The security features of IE do not execute properly.

I have made the file associations for MHML to execute Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox is my defaut browser and IE should not normally interfere.

Thanks for your help
