Over the weekend, I was able to use my VMWare player Virtual Machines fine. They didn’t work on Monday night, and I still can’t figure out what is wrong.
I am running Windows Vista 64 on the host system with Avast IS 5.0.507. I have tried 2 VMs that have both worked in the last week, they are both Vista 32. One has Avast Pro 4.8-1368 and the other has Avast IS 5.0.507. The only way I can get either VM to connect to the internet is to turn off the Firewall on the host system. The host system has no problem getting to the internet. I have tried both Bridged and NAT network connections in the VMs with no results.
The firewall on the host system has Application rules for vmplayer-services.exe, vmplayer.exe and vmnat.exe all with allow connections to all networks.
I did not install any updates to windows on the host system. Is there anywhere I can check to see if updates have been installed for Avast IS 5.0?
Vordme34 : using program update, I get “searching for server 1/2” and “can’t reach server”.
using add/remove, update, no error message, and no update even if I see that virus signature’s date is 100425-1, the day I first installed this program
I can see “download VPS files”, it’s supposed to be installed, but always the same date remains
Can’t figure what’s going wrong
Hi,
which networking mode do you use in VMware? If it is bridged - you should enable “Internet Connection Sharing mode” checkbox in “Expert Settings” on the Firewall page.
Lukas.
THANKS!
That got it to work. I don’t understand why, but by using Bridged mode on the VMs and enabling “Internet Connection Sharing mode” on the host Firewall it works.
Thanks for the report.
Bridged networking in VMWare is actually quite similar to actual connection sharing. After all you are sharing your connection with another computer, in this time its a virtual PC, but it has its own special virtual network adapter on which it is connected, so from the firewall point of view it is very much the same.
Hi all,
I got similar problems:
Host: Windows 7 64bit
Guest: Win XP 32
Both use the Avast free version (5.0.594)
My network connection works well inside home network, and I can even explore the network when using https.
However normal http will not work.
I’ve seen that I have to enable the ICS in the Firewall Expert settings. However I cannot find those settings in Avast. Is it because I use the free version ?
Kind Regards
Kywy
Additional information.
I also tried by using a NAT Interface, not a bridged one, and the Guest VM cannot connect to internet yet.
DNS is working (it can resolve naming), tracerts, even https, but not http
