When I use the VPN of the Premier version of Avast, I receive a message telling me that I am “completely invisible” to those who may try to spy on me. However, when I do a search from within the VPN for something “near me”, rather than searching around the city I’m supposedly logged into, it searches around the area of my physical location. If a search for, say, restaurants near me provides a list of restaurants within 10 miles of my physical location rather than the VPN city, for instance, Miami, FL, how can I be assured that the VPN is protecting me from potential spies? Is there something I am not understanding about the VPN? Isn’t the idea of logging in through a VPN in another city supposed to make my computer seem to be in that city? Or is the meaning of “completely invisible” different now? My idea of “completely invisible” is exactly that. When I’m out hunting, if I go to ground, I am, in fact, completely invisible to the point that I’ve been stepped on. What, exactly, does your meaning of “completely invisible” mean?
Welcome to the Forum.
I’ve reported this to Avast. I expected the same results you did and am also getting local results.
I’ve even cleared my browsing history prior to doing a restaurant search.
Even though connected thru a VPN, your browser is likely aware of the computer location and ‘informs’ the search engine of the location. The search engine may not even be looking at the connecting IP to derive the location.
Thanks for the reply. I would still like confirmation of this from Avast and I think Huai may also want that.
Disable “geolocation” in the browser and see if it makes a difference.
That had no effect in Chrome.
It’s not unexpected that the results appeared in this way. When you are not connected to SecureLine and using your browser then it is collecting info on you, so even when you are connected to SecureLine and ask it a question like “restaurants in my area” it is supposing you are where it has previously identified you.
One way to avoid this is to use the incognito window with SecureLine.
Regarding the use of wording “completely invisible” it’s a fair point that this could create a different perception as to what that actually means. It has been passed on to our Marketing team for a reveiw/rewrite in the hopes on not causing any confusion in the future.
Thanks for pointing this out. Hope this reply has helped.
