I have PC Tools Firewall with Avast having full internet access. Whenever I try to update definitions, it says “Updating Step 1/2…Initializing…Please Wait” and it looks like it’s going to begin the download but than times out after 3 seconds or so. Anybody knowof a fix or what the problem may be?? Repair/Upgrade from Add/Remove Programs does not work, nor does reinstalling program as even after installing program again still cannot get updates.
Please check update settings.
Main settings → Updates → Proxy Settings → use “Direct Connection”
If update fails, then disable PC Tools and try again.
One point: Make sure there is no “avast.setup” process in TaskManager’s process list. If this remains, avast can fail to update even with correct settings. You have to disable avast’s Self-defense to kill this process.
Direct Connection was checked. PC Tools was disabled. No “avast.setup” in Task Manager. Still fails to update.
Does error message appear? If so, what does it say?
Which avast are you using, Free/Pro/IS, version (latest is 5.0.462), VPS (latest is 100406-1 for now)?
Your OS, XP/Vista/7, 32bit/64bit?

Am using Avast 5. Updates weren’t a problem with previous Avast. There are no error messages. Whenever I try to update, it looks as if it’s going to for all of about 3-4 seconds. Than it just abruptly ends without updating.
Please post the last paragraph of setup.log, even I can’t read it correctly, some of forum members or ALWIL team members can read it and may clarify your problem…
Unfortunately I don’t have other way to solve this, sorry.
Maybe log file is there:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log"
There is no “setup.log” file in the Alwil folder
Maybe here C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log
